My son turns 18 five days before his ship date, so he cannot open his NFCU account online until then.  We do not have a local branch, so online is the best option.  At first I understood that I could call and open the account as long as I was on it (before he turns 18), but when I called to do that, I was told I had to go to a branch.

Anybody else have any experience with this?  Is there any way to get the account open sooner so that he can have his debit card before BC?

We just opened an account on line for my son. Debit card came in 3 days. If you do it on the day of his bday he should have the card before he goes.

My eldest daughter is an actual NFCU employee. Five days before ship-out is plenty of time.  Yes under 18 (by all state and national credit/banking laws someone under 18 cannot legally contract financial instruments).  Just go on line the day after his 18th birthday and ensure you have a PDF color copy (best) of his drivers license and SSN card READY to go as you will have to email that immediately.  While you can open an account online, CALL to do so- no matter how long you have to wait to do it- because you want to ask for any NFCU USN Recruit perks- they change form time to time- sometimes they give a $50 credit, things like that.  You'll want to have a readily accessible email (use yours on the account for now- not his) also use your home address- do NOT use the RTC address- so you can help access things or mail things to him.   All he will need for when he heads to MEPS for ship-out is a little piece of paper with his NFCU account number.   Our sailor's recruiter had the kids fill out a form with their account information on it but she said RTC had them do it all over again anyhow during R&O (Receiving & Outfitting) the first few days after arrival.

So bottom line, don't despair, just have EVERYTHING ready PDF color copy of his DL, SSN card, your address, YOUR email, YOUR phone number.  He can update it later because his cell phone will be locked-up and the battery dead so he'll not get any NFCU calls, etc.   You don't need a power of attorney to assist in this way but if you need to open other accounts or take out money on his behalf, you really should get a power of attorney, even a limited one- you can usually find a free format depending on your state- you don't need a lawyer or a judge- just go to UPS store or FedEx and get it notarized for about $5-20 depending on state. They are simple.    Thank you for your son's service and your wonderful support and obvious care- having a great team on the homefront is EVERYTHING!

Shay_fsmom is right- still- per our NFCU employee daughter- get on the phone so you take advantage of any bonus/incentives- the online format doesn't usually catch that- give them a call when opening the account. Your son needs to make the call but be there to ensure you coach him on this.  Advise them of his ship-out date too to ensure the debit card can get expedited.  Realize though that you may have to send the card to him later if his ship-out date is a Monday and he's not formally 18 until Thursday morning.   That weekend will be a challenge.  Again- you just need the account number up front for direct deposit and they do have funds for things- your son won't be suffering regarding money and things that first 3-4 weeks of basic.   The debit card is handy once they get to start earning privileges on Sunday to go to the NEX, do well on major evolutions , etc.

thank you so much for the info!

This is great information. My son will have me on the account as well just in case he needs me to do something, like not miss family birthday presents from him. Needless to say I would cover those for him no matter what, but at least he thought about it.
