Your future Sailor can set up an account with NFCU prior to leaving for the RTC by calling 1-888-842-6328 and get the 1199A Direct Deposit Sign-up Form online at https://www.navyfederal.org/pdf/ebrochures/1167ep.pdf. If your future Sailor has no bills that you will need to take care of for him, then he can open it now or wait until he arrives at the RTC and you do not need to be named on the account, but if he has bills that you will need to take care of for him and will need to access his earnings to do so, then it is best to open the account before he leaves and set it up so that you are also on the account.
I am not on my Sailor's NFCU account, but he has an account with a bank that I have access to for times when I need to assist him with any financial matters. He has set most of his accounts up for an allotment now, so there will most likely come a time that we can close that extra account.
The only restriction is your sailor needs to be at least 18. I know this because this is my second child to enlist in the Navy and
both opened their accounts while they were in the dep program. They just need to bring their bank account info to boot camp to get direct deposit.
Cody's Mom....I had the same question 1 year ago. My son actually waited until he was in Great Lakes. But we did find out he could have opened one earlier. I can also open one up myself. Which I am in the process of doing. So, if it were me, I would suggest to do it now. It would be just one less thing your son will have to deal with. Just my 2 cents. Have a great day:)
We did it now as well (my daughter leaves in 19 days) over the phone. Wanted to add that they told us that you can't just deposit money into it, as in transfer from bank to bank yourself online. You have to go to your bank and have them transfer funds via the routing number. NFCU will only accept transfers when a bank does it. So we are going to keep her acct open here and move a little money over to there, and I'll look now and then to make sure she has money in there and move funds over if necessary. Once she's out of bc she can take over her own finances.
My oldest son, 24, waiting to go to RTC to open his as he was fine with using NFCU. I compared it to USAA, as I have numerous military family members who recommend them. We decided that one was better as there were less restrictions and used them for my youngest who's leaving 7/18. As he's only 17, it's a good thing we opened it before he left. He wouldn't have been able to open an account by himself at RTC because he won't be 18 until it's almost done. As pay is DD only, it would have been a serious issue with him in IL and us in FL. So for young DEPPERS, you definitely want to chose your bank and open the account before they leave.
