Wondering if anyone can tell me if they have information on exactly when your recruit should open an account with the Federal Navy credit union. We are being told conflicting info. One source says now ASAP ( he leaves July 7th) and the other says he can wait until boot camp. Any one know?

I'm curious also...My sons recruiter told us he couldn't open an acct at a NFCU until he was active.. We don't have one in our area anyway (i figured out after) so I think he plans on opening an acct at our local bank for now.

Your future Sailor can set up an account with NFCU prior to leaving for the RTC by calling 1-888-842-6328 and get the 1199A Direct Deposit Sign-up Form online at https://www.navyfederal.org/pdf/ebrochures/1167ep.pdf. If your future Sailor has no bills that you will need to take care of for him, then he can open it now or wait until he arrives at the RTC and you do not need to be named on the account, but if he has bills that you will need to take care of for him and will need to access his earnings to do so, then it is best to open the account before he leaves and set it up so that you are also on the account.

I am not on my Sailor's NFCU account, but he has an account with a bank that I have access to for times when I need to assist him with any financial matters. He has set most of his accounts up for an allotment now, so there will most likely come a time that we can close that extra account.

As always, great info! Thank you!!

The only restriction is your sailor needs to be at least 18.  I know this because this is my second child to enlist in the Navy and

both opened their accounts while they were in the dep program.  They just need to bring their bank account info to boot camp to get direct deposit.

Thankyou so much! We were getting mixed info and I KNEW I could get the straight scoop here!

Cody's Mom....I had the same question 1 year ago. My son actually waited until he was in Great Lakes. But we did find out he could have opened one earlier. I can also open one up myself. Which I am in the process of doing. So, if it were me, I would suggest to do it now. It would be just one less thing your son will have to deal with. Just my 2 cents. Have a great day:)

Momplus2, I will def look into it. Thank you!
Hi jordan'mom! My daughter leaves from Sacramento to great lakes on 7/17/13 so I preferred that she open her account now so I could help her if needed. My daughter called the number that lemonelephant put in earlier reply. Opening an account over the phone was so easy and took about 20 min, the representative was very courteous & patient ( My daughter didn't have all the info in front of her) There is a $5 FEE to open a savings account and they also do a CREDIT check. Be sure to have basic info ready & include: name, address, phone, date of birth, social, drivers license, date they will end active duty. If a checking account is open they can set up the debit pin number over the phone & they can set up your online access (have computer ready) My daughter didn't add me as a joint/ co-owner on the account but there is a form your son can fill out & turn in if that's what he would like.
Also, another reason I wanted to get it early is so I can be sure the direct deposit will work, I will have money from my pay check be deposited into her account.
Hope this helps!!
Thanks for the input from other mom's....helps so much!

We did it now as well (my daughter leaves in 19 days) over the phone.  Wanted to add that they told us that you can't just deposit money into it, as in transfer from bank to bank yourself online.  You have to go to your bank and have them transfer funds via the routing number. NFCU will only accept transfers when a bank does it.  So we are going to keep her acct open here and move a little money over to there, and I'll look now and then to make sure she has money in there and move funds over if necessary.  Once she's out of bc she can take over her own finances.

Thanks! Seems like so much to do in the little time left!

My oldest son, 24, waiting to go to RTC to open his as he was fine with using NFCU.  I compared it to USAA, as I have numerous military family members who recommend them.  We decided that one was better as there were less restrictions and used them for my youngest who's leaving 7/18.  As he's only 17, it's a good thing we opened it before he left.  He wouldn't have been able to open an account by himself at RTC because he won't be 18 until it's almost done.  As pay is DD only, it would have been a serious issue with him in IL and us in FL.  So for young DEPPERS, you definitely want to chose your bank and open the account before they leave.
