Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of June (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have June ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in June, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Hello ethan's mom and lisaladybug5. The phone will probably last for the phone call and tell your son lisaladybug5 to take his phone. It will save him the long wait at the pay phones. My son called from his for the last time Tuesday evening then it went into the BOX.

Ethan's mom...My day will be Monday that my son leaves and we have not decided if he will take his phone or not.He is so excited and hs been waiting for this day for over a year. I must admit though that it is so much easier to let go this way than to lose a child to cancer. That is what keeps me going. Just know that he has made a great decision with the Navy and his future is pretty secure especially with the economy the way it is. Keep us updated!

My son left yesterday for bootcamp.  He is my oldest so having a child leave home is all new to me and it surely does not help that i can't see him for such a long time.  I shed a lot of tears yesterday but I am hoping today will be better.  I will feel better for him when I know he has arrived and gets comfortable with his new surroundings.  He has not been away from home much so know deep down he is very nervous but would never admit it.  He has worked very hard to get his scores on the ASVAB and PST so he could make it to Spec. Ops. He did not want to take anything with him so he left with no bag.  That is hard for a mom that likes to be prepared for anything.  I did finally persuade him to take a book of stamps.  His phone was only half charged when he left and he did not want to take his charger so I may not hear from him today.  This is soooo hard....

My son took his cell phone with him.  I'm so glad he did. He text us all the way to Great Lakes. I kept all those messages and go back to read them from time to time.  He text me and told me he there and getting off the bus soon.  Then later called and said I made it and doing just fine and will call in about 2-3 weeks.  He did call in about 2 weeks to let me know he made APO and sounded really good. That helps a lot but make sure to tell them how proud you are of them, they need that!

I don't think I would worry at this point clarkedu.  The likelyhood of needing it in bootcamp is slim. Once he gets to school you can talk to him and get an attorney to send him the forms to sign. I know for us it was pretty quick at the attorney's office.  Besides my son plans to marry in December possibly so he will have to redo his then.
Comment by clarkedu (MM Nuke Prototype) on June 9, 2011 at 2:00am

Since I read the comments about power of attorney, it has been haunting me. That didn't even occur to me, and my son arrived at boot camp last night.  He had me put on his bank account so I have authority to address any issues that may arise with it in his absence but that's about all we did.

Do any of you know if there is some way we can arrange POA during boot camp (we live 2500 miles away) or is it pretty much moot at this stage of the game? After bc he will be in Nuke school in South Carolina (even further away) for a year and a half, and I don't know what comes after that, except he's looking at 8 years of service and beyond.  Obviously, I know nothing about the POA process, like if it can be handled via mail or if we have to go somewhere (where?) together to take care of it.  I don't even know who to ask about this except those of you who have offered information on this site.

I welcome any guidance or advice.  Thanks!

Thank you everyone. I still have not heard from my son yet. He left yesterday. I wish he had taken his cell phone just to the "i'm ok" text. They left from here to Meps and I was told they would fly out today. That's all I know. Anyone else still waiting to hear from people who left yesterday?

Corrections - In my SR's last letter, he told me to stop sending SASE because he had to use the official small envelopes.  Yes...this week's letters were all stuffed in my SASEs!  Consistently unconsistent.   Anyway, go ahead and send SASE and stick in band aids.  If your SR doesn't need them, they can pass them off.  :)

It could also be a 715 area code, thats a North Chicago area code which is the town next to Great Lakes. And that's the area code that came across when my son called. I believe they have several lines so the numbers will be different.

My son got to use his cell phone then it went into the BOX so I didn't know about the number. Good to know the area code for when he might get to call
