My only son is leaving nov. 12th for bc(he will be 21 when he leaves and even commuted from home for college). I am having a hard time with him being gone for the holidays and knowing he may not be able to call as well. I have never been away from him for more than a week and can't imagine not even talking to him for a long period of time his sister will be leaving for college the following august and i also just lost my mom last year so I feel as if all my closest family members (other than my awesome husband) are leaving me in such a short time period. How are other moms handling this?

I know when Nov 7 gets here I will be a basket case, but right now I am trying to look at my sons departure as an adventure. When he first began talking about joining he was excited; but now he seems withdrawn and it worries me. I asked him why he was behaving this way and he said because he will miss us and doesn't want to build anymore memories for him to miss. That broke my heart! If I think of him growing, and maturing, and the benefits he will obtain along with the traveling he will be able to do I cant help but be excited for him. If I think of how much I am going to miss him I cry. It truly is a mixture of emotions but I try to focus on how well off he will be when he gets out. I think of it as an eight week vacation, then I  will be able to see him if only for a short time. Then I can Skype, call, and Facebook him which I am hoping will ease my longing to see him. Four years will go by faster than we think.

Hi all,

My oldest daughter is leaving on November 19.  She turns 18 on Wednesday.  I had a brief interlude of "my-baby-is-leaving-me" blues in March, when she enlisted, but it is only in the last week or so that it has occurred to me how soon she will be going. I don't know how I am going to handle it, but I will.

My greatest joy over the last few weeks has been watching her mature from a school girl -- way too dependent on me, but that is her generation -- to an increasingly responsible young woman.  I can't wait to meet the sailor she will become at PIR --- I know that girl will be awesome!

I can't say that I'm surprised that my little girl is going to be a nuclear engineer.  I always knew she could.  But I am so grateful and proud that, thanks to the Navy, SHE knows she can do it AND she is doing it.

Is anyone else from Connecticut/northern NYC suburbs?  Anyone else's child going to Nuke school afterwards?

My youngers daughter is also going on Nov 19, she just turn 18 at the end of Oct AND is also going to Nuke school! We live in NJ.

Right now, I am just excited and proud for her, although like you, I had a small shocking wave of realization last Thursday.

"OMG, my baby is going to the Navy!" Joined N4M right after :)

my son leaves on the 25th.. I am having such a hard time . He is my Buddy, I will miss him terribley

Hi Tracey,  my son is leaving on the 18th.  I'm experiencing emotions that I can't seem to control.  He is excited and looking forward to his new life and I'm losing my mind over how much I'm going to miss him.  How are you coping?

I am so sad!! He had a melt down last week when the realization of 2 weeks remaining.. It just broke my heart! I am so proud of his decision, not sure I could do it, just hope he is ok!!

He is no longer working and seems a little distant! I just cry when ever i think about him leaving! I want to see him sworn in but afraid i will be a mess!

I am thinking the same thing.  I want to see him sworn in and go to the airport but I'm afraid I might collapse. I have been a single mom since he was 4 and I have always had him to motivate me to keep me strong.  Without him, I don't know how I'll make it.  I've got to get it together but right now I'm struggling.

My son left Monday and I could not stop crying and don't know how to live without him but I find that I get a little better each day.  I know that he is nervous and excited as he has waited almost a year since he "signed on".  It's nice that we have this website here to help each other through this!

Debbie

when is your sailor leaving?

My son leaves November 6th. He is 20. I am excited for him but nervous, have I learned everything he needs to have and know before his departure, I hope so,still trying to get back to...things you can and cannot take to boot camp, but I get caught up in reading something new that I have just found. I know the tears will come later but for now just trying to enjoy the moments.
