Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of September (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have September ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in September, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones)  Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:
Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc. Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

Thanks for joining us. We hope you will realize you are not alone, and will soon make new friends, plus feel supported and encouraged! :)

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

Well, today I went with my SR to the NRS, he then was transferred to the hotel close to MEPS.  We just returned from there after a nice dinner and a relaxing hour or so with him.  Tomorrow is MEPS, swearing in and then he's off.  Lots of other families and their recruits of all ages and branches saying their good-byes at the hotel. I saw the excitement, fear and pride in all of them.  One man was leaving his wife and newborn baby. I was proud of that young man. Brave, courageous.  So proud. My SR is excited and ready.  As I prepare to move to the BC discussion, I will share information as it comes on this board.  Be proud mom's and grandmas!!! Your SR is doing something of a higher calling.  With Love from California

Ladies.....here is the group page for once you are at Bootcamp. This is the place to hang with other moms/grandmoms/etc who have SRs at Great Lakes. You'll find lots of pertinent info here:

ProudMawMaw - please tell your granddaughter not to get all stressed out about this and definitely do NOT do the laxative thing or anything else drastic. She needs healthy nourishment and rest. BC will be stressful enough. They are not going to turn her away for whatever 10 lbs her recruiter thinks she needs to lose. She will lose that weight in BC if she keeps to the physical regime and eats normal size meals.

Have her do this:

Eat fruits, veggies, lean meats.

NO extra pasta, sweets, breads - the stuff that adds bulk and is hard to burn off.

Have her walk/run every day. Try to a minimum of 3-5 miles if even around a track someplace. Put on some music and move!

Rest. Rest. Rest. Get decent sleep each night.

Drink water. Ditch the sodas and phouffy sugary lattes, etc. Put lemon in the water.

Normal, healthy eating habits. Do not do any weird yo-yo diet thing or she'll be wiped out before it even starts. Better to be a few pounds over but feeling strong and healthy than thin and pooped out.

Relax. She will be fine. Trust me on this one - those extra pounds, whether she needs to lose them or not, will fall off. My daughter was thin - and fit - after her 9 weeks and she didn't need to lose anything.

Breathe.....we had misinformation from our recruiter as well but once the SRs get to Great Lakes, it all falls into place.

My granddaughter is with me tonight and enjoying my time with her. The problem she is having right now is when she went to her physical and first swearing in she was told not to gain weight. She was told by her recruiter a week ago she had to lose 10 pounds. She did not gain weight but now she is so stressed trying to lose 10 lbs before Sunday. She thought of laxatives and quick diets, I'm so afraid that she be over doing it and them be to weak for the physical things she will be put though next week. If the recruiter could have said something sooner she could have been watching what she ate. The recruiter here has been useless, there was things that she was suppose to know that she didn't because of every meeting had been canceled by recruiter. If she was told not to gain weight and hasn't shouldn't she be alright. I keep talking to her about keeping up her strength. This has put way to much pressure on her. Need help any advice?

karenstout, LOVE the family medal you sent. That is oh so special.

julieand3, you are most welcome. I'm out of the BC range but deployments and such will be difficult to deal with (for me) because there are yet more long stretches of time with little to no communication. It helps all of us to kvetch, worry, and hold each other through those mystery times....

Again all, once your SR is at BC - try to find the group that correlates with your PIR date to continue discussions.....

Oh - remember, please do NOT post your Sailor's last names anywhere publicly.

Comment by Diana(PO3/IT3) on September 4, 2012 at 8:42pm

Yea slyancey! I'm so happy you were able to get to MEPS in time for the swearing in. Yes, they do mix the military groups. It's different every time with the numbers. Now, it's waiting for the official form letter which will have your SRs PIR date and other important info like the address to send mail to. "The Box" with her belongings will show up as well - give it anywhere from a week to 10 days. Once you find out her Ship/Division#, then you can find a N4M group on here just for families with 'kids' in your SRs PIR date. If no one creates that group for you, let me know and I can do it for you all.

You're off and running now. Stay strong and know she (all of them) are really in good hands. The Navy takes great care of their own......

Hugs and peaceful thoughts for all of you.
