He ships 4 weeks from today. We started watching The West Wing on Netflix from the beginning this weekend. His idea. What's that quote about being able to keep your wits about you when everyone else is losing theirs? Does that go for values, too? Even in the Marines? This will be the shortest 4 weeks of my life.
Even back in the 80s I got in trouble for expressing Democratic leanings when I was in the Navy. I was in during the election of 1988 when the first President Bush was running, and I was harassed for supporting Gov. Michael Dukakis. I'm not exactly a shrinking violet, so I gave as good as I took, but oh boy was I outnumbered. I was told by many of my shipmates (including some in my chain of command) that if Dukakis was elected, that our paychecks would be cut, and all sorts of other crap that we still hear today. It didn't help that it was clear that I was not a fan of then-President Reagan.
Kirsi, I messaged you my facebook link when I "friended" you here on N4M just now. Hannah, don't forget to "friend" me on facebook!
There are a lot more liberals in the military than you might think, Hannah. My son did just fine with his Marines....he called me once and said "I had to break a Marine's heart tonight, mom..." and when I asked how..."I had to tell him Colbert is satire"....and after a minute he says "Then I had to explain what satire means"...Now he's out, he has a lot of political discussions on his fb page, and he's pretty respected by the guys he served with...
I think it's because the extreme right and left in this country have ruined it for anyone with a rational, educated opinion. People are afraid to express their views. Even my Poolee has decided to become a "redneck" because he thinks he will fit in better, even though he has no qualms supporting all women's rights, gay rights/gay marriage etc. and he thinks Romney is an idiot. I have no idea what he will do the first time he sees a Marine (or any other branch) being sexually harrassed. It will kill him on the inside and yet he'll be able to do nothing about it, right? I am grateful every day that the majority of the people in this country voted for Obama and relieved he will be my son's commander in chief. Okay, that's enough venting from me :) If you haven't been on TexasDocMoc's FB page, you should. It's brilliant.

This group used to be pretty busy. I wonder why it became inactive. Any ideas?

I still lurk on N4Ms although my son is now a poolee (marine depper). heavy sigh.
I love the concept of this Group, but there is rarely any action here.
