aaron'sgirl- if you're thinking Washington, Pacific Lutheran University is about 30 minutes from base in Bremerton and Seattle Pacific University is in Seattle, right across the street from UW. They are private schools but when I went to a private school, it actually cost just as much after tuition wavers and grants so if you're applying to make sure you get in somewhere, check them out. Also, both of them are on a semester schedule (15 week long classes) while UW is on a quarter schedule (10 weeks) so that might help you transfer credits if you decide to do so.
Also, check out any general education class requirements for the colleges you're looking at so you can spend your first year taking care of those and ensuring a little more that they should transfer. I transferred once and most colleges (the one you're leaving and the one you're going to) are super nice about helping you get stuff figured out.

J&K--holidays off are never guaranteed. If you know someone else in the same t-track section as him, ask and see what the schedule will be. Otherwise, I would just forget about surprising him and just ask him to see if he's off. No point going out there if you won't see him much. esp since it's the holiday weekend...prices might be up too!

emily- if you're taking summer classes this summer, get on it :) Deadlines to apply are probably quickly approaching!

casey & chris mom-Jestines on Meeting St. has good tea! (it's actually been voted Best Sweet Tea in the Charleston City Paper's Best of Charleston a few years!) They also have yummy food..but be prepared to wait outside the restaurant..it's always packed.

Kathy- I thought about applying to a couple of different schools... One in each of the areas that he'll be in, and make the decision later on when things are more clear. Right now I'm hoping to move in with him during prototype and take some summer classes after my senior year... Is that a crazy idea or is it realistic? Oh, and I recgonized you from facebook, too! It just caught me off guard... didn't freak me out :)

emily--oh..there's prb no reason to apply to cofc then..unless he is going for staff pick up or if he applies to be an officer and goes to school at the citadel or something..I would just wait til he gets his orders and find out where he's going..then start applying..transferring is a pain in the butt..i lost 23 credits when I transferred..so I had a lot of make up work :/

My problem now is the timing... He'll finish up prototype before I finish my first year of college. I'm not sure its worth all the transfer hassle for one year (or less).

emily--i recognized your picture from fb! I'm on some of the groups u r in and I think we've written to each other on one of the walls! sorry if it freaked u out! lol

yep, most states do give in state tuition to military spouses...which is really helpful. out of state tuition at CofC is about 23k a year, whereas in state is a little over 10k (keep in mind..that's after a 15% tuition increase for this coming year)

and yep, you will get a lot more gov. aid through fafsa if it's only based on your/his salary...and not your parents! there are also military specific scholarships offered (nationally and through many schools' veterans affairs office)

..if you have any scholarships now, check and see if they transfer. I lost all my FL scholarships when we moved, but ONE of my scholarships DID transfer and that helped A LOT! the military spouse scholarships and the money I got from fafsa covered the rest of my tuition...and I also got the leftover funds back in my pocket. It def. helps to be married :)
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on June 12, 2010 at 7:51pm
I'm thinking... if I would go to school near him, I'd definitely wanna be married. 1. I'd get instate tuition (if I've read right.) 2. HELLLLO, amazing FAFSA... (right now I will be getting zero "need-based aid" and zero parental help). 3. Out-of-State schools such for 2 reasons... a.) higher tuition b.) sometimes their scholarships are for instate only :( So if I married him, then I'd probably be eligible, right?

Okay, I know it sounds like thats taking advantage of him/military benefits. But if I'm going to marry him anyways, why not just do it sooner... right? Wow. I sound like a terrible person!

And Kathy! You called me by my name! I didn't notice it at first, and then I was like hey! ... I don't have a problem with it, it just caught me off guard since I'm on n4m and not facebook :)

emily-hey! I went to the College of Charleston after we moved to SC and just graduated from there last month. it's a great school :) let me know if you have any questions about it..oh..and usually, you have to fill out a fafsa and an application before you get any financial offers.

I just changed what schools I want my ACT scores sent to... I removed two of my Ohio choices and put in College of Charleston, and University of Washington (close to our top two choices). I guess it doesn't hurt to see what kind of money they'd offer me, right? :) We'll see what my mom says when mail starts coming from University of Washington... :)
