Hello
We look forward to hearing about your sailors journey. How he/she likes being an MAA (MA) and which kind of job they are doing and how you are doing knowing what your sailor does for a living.
NOTE: Please help keep our sailors safe. Don't give out exact locations.Example: If he/she is in Iraq you can say Iraq but I would not say the name of the camp or a town near the camp. If they are on a ship don't give the last known location. Although some of that is public we don't in anyway want to jeopardize them.

I always figured it was a "needs of the Navy" issue and where the numbers were needed at the time. So, yep to what you said.

My son told me before BC that he would be going to VA for A School and then sometime while he was at BC, he said he was going to SA; so, yes, it can change. I never saw his contract so I don't know what was in it.

Congratulations to your new MA and the others in his class. Enjoy your time with your new MA. (It goes by way too fast.) (Also, are you sure he is MASN? That would be E3 and most are still E1--MASR--for a while, even several months after A School, and then E2 is MASA.)

The pinning ceremony lasts about 30 minutes. I couldn't afford to go down for my sailor's pinning since he needed me to cover his flight for his leave, but my sailor and I are so appreciative of a special mom who took pictures for us. I looked up the info that has been posted before about going down to SA. Your sailor will need to let them know at the gate that you are coming and you will need picture ID. There is a place on base called the Gateway Inn (no elevator, very basic, more like a barracks than a hotel) and another called the Gateway Lodge and family members can sometimes stay at one of those. Other moms have mentioned the La Quinta, which seems to be very close to base, and the Red Roof Inn, which is less than a half mile away. This link may give you other ideas http://www.lackland.us/accomodations.html for where to stay.

Yep. I think it's an experience that they are glad to get behind them. Your sailor will need to keep his certificate in a safe place because if he can't find it later, he may have to go through it again. They have to recertify every so often and the other Levels are not as bad as getting sprayed again--for example the next time is a cloth sprayed with OC Spray placed on the forehead. I found these on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUo7TG2DSWY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zDSHLcnMG0&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YpW6gf6UV0&NR=1
There are more on there, but those will give you a general idea of what they go through. The comments below the videos of those who have actually gone through it say it all.

OC spray is a very strong pepper spray and the oil is removed by shampoo and baby shampoo is more gentle to be used in and around the eyes. The sailors go back to their rooms and can't leave to get anything so they need to have it ahead of time. It is also good to have some sort of milk product (milk or yogurt) to help take the burn out, but some say they did fine with just the shampoo. Wash and wash again and avoid recontamination (getting the oil on something else--cell phone, door knobs, or clothing, etc--and touching it again after cleaning up).

Yes, it is the Navy's military police.

Thanks everyone for the insight on Ravens. If it is high secretive - I just wish someone would tell me WHY and WHAT it is about!!
My son did call tonight! He said the class started with 15 in it and they are down to eight already. It started July 7 (I'll never forget that day - my birthday!!)

Orders - yep, while in "A" school Derek had heard he was going to Bahrain, then Guam, then he ended up in Portsmouth, VA - with a short stint to Kuwait - oil platforms!

Derek also did his "A" school in Dam Neck - but he is not a Reservist - so not real sure the reasoning! Too bad - because I live in Texas - he could have come home some!

I did a search and found this on the Boot Camp Moms page this week that might help if it is true: Comment by Jacqueline Manning on July 7, 2009 at 7:42am: The rate(job) has nothing to do with the fact if they are grad n go or not. But the majority of the grad n go's come out of the 1st 2 Divisions in a PIR Group. http://www.navyformoms.com/group/bootcampmoms?page=46#comments

It all just depends on the needs of the Navy. When my son had PIR, he flew out to SA on Sun, but others who also had PIR on the same day and were in his class at SA, flew out on Tuesday. I've seen on here where some were grad-n-go and where some were told they would be grad-n-go and orders changed the week of PIR and they weren't. I know, that's not real helpful; it appears to be the Navy way.
