Do the families ever get together for potlucks, picnics?
Hi MEsailormom...I would love to check out the Toboggan championships! It just has to be one of the coldest days of the year :( Is this an annual event? I remember when the ships were coming last year. I remember we contemplated going but we took our daughter to York instead. I believe it was because of the weather and the forecast was better in the South that day. Its too bad they never came, just seeing them would have brought you closer to your son (in spirit). Its great that your son seems to have been in schooling since he left. Any and all the schooling you can get while in the military is an added bonus. I am very proud of my son for his decision and I pray everyday that his dreams are fulfilled as I do with all my kids. :)
I already have my hotel booked. His PIR is 3/30. I have not purchased my flight tickets yet. Any advise out there would be very much appreciated!!! We are keeping our eyes on the "wanna get away" Southwest Airline tickets, they are very cheap.
Hi! Cath Camden is such a great place to live....National Toboggan Championships this weekend! You should see those some day. I believe the USS Carl Vinson was supposed to come into Rockland Lobster Festival last year but got turned away due to a hurricane down the coast. We were going to bting them all pies!! My son is a Corpsman at Camp Pendleton working greenside with the Marines. He is currently doing a 2 week stint in Combat Trauma Management. Seems he has been schooling since he left. As I said before he is thriving and I am very proud. The sting of him being away is less painful now. Try and attend PIR for your Sailor. It is such a great ceremony. Coffee is always on here in Camden!
Thank so much Mainemom...This is all very exciting. I look forward to it all!!!
If you go to the USS Carl Vinson site, you will be they post numerous daily pictures of the sailors and feature work units as well as activities-morale day and shore leaves. They also videotape messages from a number of sailors at each holiday and there is an online ship's magazine published weekly. When they are deployed you can email them as you want so your daughter will have alot of opportunity to stay close to her brother.
Mainemom, We have told her that. We told her she would probably have to estimate or wait until we can get that info or put an approximate location. As you said in your previous post, these were most likely areas that you knew the ship was in or learned after the fact. This was all her idea and she doesn't yet realize all the rules. Through this she will learn a great deal about the world and geography at the same time. My daughter loves maps just like her father. Thanks for the advise. Thats awful about the recent infractions. Loose lips sink ships!! I doubt my son would reveal locations when he is not supposed to, he already knows he will not be able to tell us a lot that goes on. I don't think I even want to know half of what goes on to be honest. lol. I would worry to much!!
Tell little sister their destinations can't always be revealed-all Ben usually says is that his boat is in the water; unless the Navy reveals where they are first, your son should say nothing about when they are going to be somewhere as there are some pretty serious consequences. My son's ship had 49 sailors dismissed from the Navy for infractions recently.
Hi Mainemom, Thanks for your response. I think its great that you can follow the ship! I had no idea. This will be great for us especially his little sister who plans to map out all of his destinations on her maps. Is there also a forum for you on N4M's? I really do love this site, it has been so helpful! Thanks for the info!!
Hi, Cathie! My hame is syndi and I live in Pittston. My son Ben went into the Navy ; he had completed 3 years of college and could not find a job so he could finish his degree so he enlisted. Boot camp has some rough times for the recruits and is hard because you cannot communicate with your child. He is now based out of San Diego on the aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson. He is on his second deployment in less than a year and has been to Hong Kong twice-in less than a year-,as well as some cities in the Middle East,Manila and Hawaii. You can follow the USS Carl Vinson on Face Book-they make every effort to keep you connected to the ship. And yes, the sailors are pushed to educate and better themselves constantly. By the way, his recruiter was of little help once he got my son signed up.
Hi MEsailormom...That is great that your son is thriving and he love it! Boot camp is difficult mostly due to not being able to keep in touch. His recruiter's name was Jeff. He was okay but you really cant rely on them for great advise. They have to reach their quotas and that is all they care about. My son's job will be on an aircraft carrier. He chose this because he wants to travel. He also plans to finish up his schooling while in the Navy. I heard that they really encourage that so I think its great! What is your sons job? By the way, we love to visit Camden. It a beautiful place!!
