I had to wonder if my freedom loving son would make it through BC. But he not only made it through, he turned into a very polite, grateful son. I can't thank the Navy enough for the discipline they put the recruits through. It is worth it.

Ruth, Thank You!!! I know he will do fine, it is a mom thing with me right now. He is going "Nuke" at the moment and will be going in as an E-3. He has done a few things and also recruited a few other kids to sign. He has one of his best friends shipping out on 18 August and gave him a few kids too, so it all goes around. You are right, it will be an adventure. Heck, every time we get in my car it is an adventure, when the K's were younger that is what they called it. Too funny, it has stuck over the years. Thanks again.

Thanks btw, missed your post earlier. I know he will do great, I think deep down I am starting to stress. I am a bit cranky lately. It will be hard to let him go, though he is ready to do so. Thanks again. I will lean on this site I am sure!!

@Jaz, I know about the meet and greet. I can't make it though, too many other things going on. Another time I am hoping!

Sharon, check out the information on the 8/14 meet & greet. There are some great mom's here to help us. I can't wait to meet them in person.

Thanks Jaz, I will remind him. He works well as a team player so I am sure he won't have any problem doing that. He is good at encouraging others, so may help others as well. I am a writer, always have loved it and he knows that. I wrote a long letter to him when he graduated in June, he loved it. Our dog, Nikko is a Golden Retriever, so she will also write him letters! Great idea! Thanks again!

Sharon, very true, my son the first 2 weeks were the hardest. Remind him to that they are looking for them to work at a division, not individual. Because if one causes trouble, they all get it. So he may have to play big brother to help some one else. But tell him not to do it for him, but with him until he gets it. My son tried to stay under the radar of the RDC's, but they get to know them all. I am sure he will be fine. Please write lots - my son loved his letter from the dog.

Thanks Kathryn, I am sure that he won't have any problems though a new mom to the site would be scared to death. Diego is really good at following directions and getting the job done, always gives 125% when doing something, and does it right the first time. He pretty much never had to say things at school, he would only have to look at someone and they understood what he was saying. He is a great kid, very mature for his age and doesn't tolerate goofing off when you are not supposed to be. When you are doing your job, then do it and do it right. He played baseball and they other guys always looked up to him and knew that he didn't mess around when playing the game. He took his rear view mirror off of his truck and I asked about it one day. He told me, "mom, I took it off because I never look back. I always look ahead. You can't change what has happened so no reason to look back." I was quite impressed when he told me that, words of wisdom of a 16 year old at the time. He even took his girlfriend's mirror off, they don't look back, only ahead, because that is where they are going. We will see how their relationship holds up while is he away and she is at college. They have a great relationsip, but still they are so young. Thanks again, I appreciate it. Oh, I have to laugh............it was like living with his dad and his wife, too funny!!

Sharon, don't worry, He'll learn the ins and outs real soon. The first couple weeks are the hardest because they don't get mail or anything. Back from my Navy days, it's all about Attention to Detail. Prepare him that there will be stupid rules etc but they are training you to not question orders which is very important in combat or out in the fleet. Best advice is send lots of mail that helps them soo much.

Wow, reading these recent posts make me a bit uneasy about my son going to BC at GL. He will turn 18 this coming Saturday, he has a great head on his shoulders, but still worry about all that he will be going through. That is pretty sad that the guys can't look at each other, talk and just be people. I am sure that my son won't have any problems once there, but still these posts raise some concerns.

Jaz, Brandon waited until Sat. to get his pics. Ruth, I am ex-Navy and that's how they roll in boot camp. You need to learn not to question orders, seems awful strict and they will learn as they continue their career that a lot of it was BS but in the long run you do learn disicpline.
