That's right Moms!  We are going to the mountains of Afghanistan in March.  Our group is 300 Marines (15 females)  They are HMH-465 Det A.

We have some baseball fans in our adoptees SO since we are entering spring - spring training that is - our theme for the month is BASEBALL!  In addition to their requests let's give them some baseball goodies to celebrate the start of the baseball season.  Some suggestions:  baseball cards, shredded Big League Gum, shredded jerkey, peanuts, popcorn, cracker jack, sunflower seeds.  Stats on teams, pennants, game day programs, sports magazines, - whatever you can think of!

Pillowcases are always appreciated and don't forget those cards and letters!

Their requests:

Orville Reddenbocker popcorn

corn nuts - all flavors but ranch is their favorite

magazines - workout, bow hunting, field & stream, boating

salt & pepper shakers

Looks like boxes have already started arriving in Afghanistan:

Mrs. Steele,

My name is GySgt. XXX XXXX, I am a U.S. Marine currently deployed to Afghanistan with Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron 461. My unit received care packages from students at St. Benedict Catholic School.
We would like to write them back thanking them and to answer some of the questions they asked. We appreciate the support! I am not sure if you are with the school or strictly a coordinator for the packages, if you could send me an e-mail address to the principle or someone else that could communicate our gratitude to the students I would appreciate it. Again, Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,                                                                                                                                                                                    XXXX XXXXX

I wrote him back and explained more, clarifying the letters from the students, then heard from him again:

Thank You for the reply. We will look forward to the coming packages! You said your son is deployed on the USS Kearsarge, I have Marines from my unit also deployed on that Ship. They should be returning home soon!!
That entire MEU did a Great job considering everything they were tasked with and the amount of time they have been deployed. I look forward to writing the kids and thanking them and again, Thank you for your support. It means a lot to the Marines and all Military members for that fact. God Bless.

                                                                Semper Fi,
                                                                                      XXXXXX

And one more time from him:

Also….Please pass our Gratitude to all of the “Moms” that put the packages together!! It makes a difference here!

Mike

I'm going to get him the teachers name at St. Benedict's and also another teacher friend of mine who's kids made cards. I know they will all love hearing from the Marines!!

I can't believe the boxes have started arriving already!  WOW.  I had mail in my boxes too.  This time around (for some reason) the people I asked to write cards and notes really came through for me.  Hopefully there will be enough mail for everyone to have some!  That would really be nice.  Thanks for sharing Cheryl.
Thank you Cheryl.  The letter is so incredibly sweet.  The school is going to absolutely LOVE hearing from the Marines.  It would be a great pic to send them back a picture of the faces of the children as the letter is read to them.  Awww...I can just picture it.  Isn't this just the greatest place!
Wow, that's great!  I'm excited they're getting packages already!

Another one:

Dear Ms. Steele,
Thank you for all you do for our troops over here in Afghanistan and
elsewhere. We received a package sent by you with some fine "goodies"
enclosed. They were received and shared amongst our shop. I have at this
time 13 Marines and 7 Civilian Marine Contractors in the shop.  We work
at a Marine Heavy Lift Helicopter Squadron in Southern Helmand Province,
Afghanistan. With the kindness of people like yourself and the generous
donations provided we lack for very little here. Our sincerest thanks to
you job well done.

Just awesome and a thumbs up too!  Thank you for sharing Cheryl!!!

e-mail from our POC:

"You gals are awesome!  I have been receiving them all week and all the Marines are loving it!  Thank you so much again!"

That is fantastic...  I will have the WA boxes on their way tomorrow...  Kim and I are both stitching like crazy to complete the last 120 pillowcases needed...  anyone else want to pitch in a few??

Susan, you and Kim are dolls.  I've been trying to get back to my sewing machine but not any luck.  And I need to start stitching for May.

Hugs!

Susan, I've got 26 made that can be shipped.  Will that help?
Seriously??  You have 26 pillowcases!!  Fantastic!!  I will add that to our count... thanks so much for sending them along!!  I finished the first ten last night...  will keep working away on them!!

Susan, a little here, a little there and they all added up.  Yeah for us!  I will plan to ship tomorrow and find some stuff to fill the box.  I know I can fit 43 pillowcases in a box (ha ha ha - no comments DIANE or MOLLY!!!)

Also, if you are looking for sewers in your areas, I can post an ongoing VolunteerMatch opportunity if you are willing to be a point of contact to collect them.  Let me know and I'll post away!!!
