I will be doing scarfs for Christmas,to send to Afganistan. Since it takes a while to knit or crotchet a number of scarfs, I'm asking all of you for your help now. The scarfs will need to be no wider than 8 inches and 60 inches long and no fringe that could get caught in their gear. They must be desert camo, tans, and browns. Any of you have any questions, please let me know. The more scarfs the better. They will all be sent to our sailors and Marines to keep them warm. To those who don't knit & crochet the scarfs can be made of polar fleece. They actually have a fabric pattern that looks like a sand (grades of tans). Since the fleece is about 60" wide, all the you need to do is cut 7 or 8' wide stripes and the cut off the selvages to make them look neat.

We now have 250 scarfs.

Thank you, Valeriejean! I'll try that! I just found a bunch of tan/beige camoflage verigated yarn at Walmart for $2.28! I bought all of it! What size hook do you use?
Wow that's a great deal! I use a size "k".
I've finished 2 scarves, but have a bunch more to go!!! I stopped at Joann's today and bought the whole bolt of camo fleece (2.25 yds), which was 50% off, AND they gave me an additional discount of $2.25 off b/c it was the end of the bolt! I love getting bargains!
I know exactly how you feel. I just bought 20 yards of fabric for a project. It was $2.99/ yd but I had that 50% off coupon. I think they were planning on some one buying 2 or 3 yards not an entire bolt. But it was a great bargain.
OK, I have finished crocheting one scarf and have started a second one. I'm sure I will get that one finished in time.
Now I'm hoping that I can do a third one. YAY!!!
HI, I have two scarves, both knitted.
OK, everyone. I will be taking a final count on the 16th of Nov. I'll include all those finished by then and ones that will be done by the end of November. You guys are all great!
Ok.. I need help, seriously, especially now that my sailor will deploy at the end of November. Where do I send the scarves, notes, cards, goodies, etc? Is there a list to select from? I have been reading this site for hours, jumping from one to the other, laughing, crying and counting my blessings for "meeting' you all Navy Moms. So, I got distracted and lost. If the Navy is America's Navy, you all are America's Moms. What a power you all have!! So, please, guide me! Thaaaaaaaaaank you.
You will be able to send your scarfs directly to our Adopted for Christmas group. The address and shipping date will be announced by Molly very soon. You are encouraged to put in a note and some Christmas cards in your box. Just stay tuned to Molly's adopt a Sailor for the big announcement. Hopefully, some time today.!
I am working on scarf #2. using the homespun bulky-never used that before and it is nice. Actually, I re-crocheted one that was donated but real wide and then narrow-looked funny, so I re-did. didn't have enough to finish, so bought some brown for the ends so it will be 2 tone.

I am doing a half double crochet and it almost feels "felted". very soft and I bet it will be warm.
Oooh...that sounds like it's going to be really nice and cozy to wear! I'd like to see how that scarf turns out! Is the yarn wool? I'm also looking for other alternatives besides just doing a dc all the way. I'll try the half dc on my next one. I've started my 4th scarf and will do about 12 of the fleece scarves. BTW Sue, I love your pillowcases! I bet they are treasured by everyone that receives them. Do you have a group to help you with this? I'd love to help if you need it. Thx...
Carolyn, check us out at Heads at Ease. Sue has a wonderful group overthere.
