Information

Moms/Dads/Families with Nukes in Ballston Spa, NY

Wanted to start a group for moms, dads, and other family members that have Nukes currently attending Prototype in Ballston Spa, NY.

Members: 170
Latest Activity: Jan 9, 2019

Thought I would start a group for the families of sailors stationed in NY for Prototype. It will be nice to chat about what is going on with our sailors whether it is good or bad so that we can support each other. I have connected with many people on this site but it is always nice to meet others that are going through the same things together. Also if you have had a sailor in NY for an extended amount of time then you can help the new ones just coming in on what to expect.

I just found this group. My son, PO2 ET Lee, has been in Ballston Spa for over two years. First as a prototype student, now as a Staff Pick Up (SPU) instructor. He was raised in Virginia Beach and thought Charleston was too hot. So off to NY he went. The military presence in the area is very small, so the NPTU Nukes can blend in. Yet, all the locals know they are there.

My son snowboards and the recreational activities in NY are abundant. Adirondack State Park is close--it's the largest park in the lower 48. He's been to Fenway Park, the New Yankee Stadium, Citizen's Bank Park (Phillies stadium), and National's Park (DC). Montreal is only three hours up the road. I've been there twice; the surrounding area is beautiful, if you don't mind the snow. I was born and raised in Chicago, so I don't mind the weather.

Housing is usually not much of an issue. My son and his buddies stayed in a motel for a few days before they found a place. They had nine days travel allowance from GC IRRC. The Nukes in NY network for housing; since they rotate in and out frequently, the apartments pass on from one group to the next. The landlords are, for the most part, fair. They know the rent will get paid and they won't have much trouble with NPTU students and staff.

An unclassified picture of the site can be seen here:

I was once allowed past the main gate to drop off my son for work. Seeing the sentrys with large automatic weapons strapped to their chests was an experience I won't soon forget.
