Jill V, they way I understood it used to be, was that they graduated FRAC and received their wings and then had to do "quals" to keep going. Now they don't get their wings until after the quals are done, which is after FRAC graduation. I was so looking forward to being able to pin my sons wings on him. Now I guess it will happen sometime after graduation which I don't know if they will have another ceremony for that or not.

If I'm not correct or if you all have more info than I do, please correct me or inform me. I'd gladly welcome any info....Shawn is not very forthcoming with information....I sometimes have to drag it out of him.

Why did they change the process to getting the wings? Do they just have to wait to get them longer, more requirements? Or do AW/Rescue swimmers not get them at all anymore?

Chris, that's great news! Christi, thank you for your words.......and, yes, you're right, I was thinking that even if he were here, he'd most likely spend the majority of his birthday with his friends and it is the military way. I should know being that my son is our family's 3rd generation of Sailors........

Chris, that's great. I''m happy that Greg finally has his wife close by to help cheer him on. My son Shawn is just a week or two behind Greg in FRAC. I'm also hoping they can speed things up a bit to hopefully get their wings before Oct. 1st. I was secretly bummed they changed things but I couldn't let Shawn know. He was going to let me pin his wings on at graduation. Oh well.

Texas Mom of 2- I understand the dissapointment of not sharing the "milestone" birthday with your son. My son just turned 21, and it was hard for me too. Although I'm sure he wouldn't have spent the whole birthday with me even if he was home. It was his 21st birthday and he had a great time with his buddies. Guess it's just something all us Mom's have to get used to with our children in the military. But doesn't mean we have to be happy about it. ; )

Yeah for Greg! I bet the past 6 months have been tough. Glad they get to be together.

Awwww, Kari! You're wonderful! LOL, my son knows all about my being on this website......for months I've been telling him stuff I've read and he has even sat down to read some of it himself. Just tell him you're on Navy4Moms and he will definitely understand.

I would love for you to send him a card -- how nice! Could you also wish him a Happy Birthday? His 18th birthday is this Friday the 17th............I'm holding my head up but truthfully, I'm a little heartbroken he has to celebrate it away.... I'll send you an email with mailing info. Thanks!!!!

Oh Jill, I meant to say that yes, I think my son is much better looking than the family dogs but if you ask our dogs, I'm sure they would disagree! :o) LOL!

Hi Jill, thank you! At this point, we don't know how long (if any) the wait is for his school. I've heard the wait is long so he and I have talked about this and he's prepared for it to be a "wait." I know as boot camp progresses he will definitely know and I'll keep you posted. I'm very impressed with your daughter's plans!

Hey Texas... congrats on your son and boot camp and rescue swimmer. How long does he have to wait after boot camp to get to aircrew school and swim school? Just wondering as I've gotten lots of mixed information as to how 'full' this job is. Keep us informed as to his progress, I love to hear the stories of kids making it through! Good luck. By the way... I hope you don't have to replace his pictures with the family dog as I'm sure your son is much better looking than the dog! :-)

My son is in boot camp as we speak.......his contract is for Rescue Swimmer. There are postings on the boot camp forum saying that all Special Ops should not have their photo's on here and to remove them. Is rescue swimmer Special Ops? I know he's in the division with Seals, EOD's, SWCC - the 800 division....but am I out of guideline for posting his photo's? I know not to say his last name, that to me is a given. But I should replace his photo's with the family dog?
