Just got the "I'm a Sailor" call! So,proud of my daughter. These past 8 weeks have been emotionally very tough. Can't wait to see her next week.

ShawnMom,

I understand exactly what you are saying.  I think those in the Navy like to shorten everything down to simple, even if the shorthand is not exactly correct.  And because when you get on up there in the Petty Officer rates, the rating and rate get combined - even my son is IS1 and so they just call it his rate.  But for those beginning it's good to know the difference and trust me, after a few years even our sailor girls will be combining them and calling them "their rate"!!!!!!

ncdeb,

I couldn't agree with you more!!!  Thank you, and I'm so glad it is a good fit for you!!!

JayDee,

LOL!!!!!

Smidgee,

I am so sorry to hear of your fur baby's passing.  That is a difficult time to go through.  So happy you will be able to have some time to visit with her!!!  Where will her C school be??  Hope she's out of Great Lakes by the harsh winter!!!  It is seriously cold there, especially with the lake right beside her!!!  But enjoy your time with family!!!!

Thank you, Anna!! I'm comforted knowing she is being taken care of, and trust she will recover well and much stronger. :)

Anna, no worries, thank you for correcting me! Now I just feel badly that I may have confused somebody else! This is so absolutely why we need you, to keep us in line!

Esti'sMom,

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's injury!!!  But JayDee said it best, the Navy will help her heal and get stronger and she will eventually graduate!!  It is a little disappointing when they find out they won't get to graduate with the division they started with though!!  I'll be keeping her in my prayers for a speedy and complete recovery!!!

Welcome Tracy1120!!  So happy to have you join us!!  I sent you a personal welcome on your profile page.  We will be learning this new Navy lingo for the rest of our sailor's career.  My daughter and son have been serving for years and just recently I learned what my daughter's qualification stood for that she just earned.  Look for my post a page or two back with the picture of the patch!!!  And I'm a Navy vet myself so I'm still learning!!

I will clarify one thing tho.  The sailor's "job" is called their rating.  Rate refers to their paygrade.  During bootcamp your sailor is a Seaman Recruit even if they were guaranteed a higher rate when they went in.  My enlisted daughter went in as an E3 (Seaman) but although she was paid as an E3, she was referred to as a Recruit during bootcamp.  Then on graduation day she got to put on her 3 stripes.  After they finish their A school then they get to have their rating symbol on their uniform.  JayDee had all the correct lingo for her daughter but the MMN is her rating and her rate is 3rd class petty officer (E4).  Your daughter will have to take the Navy wide advancement test to make 3rd class PO but she could have a good recommendation to advance which will make her chances higher!!  Hope this all makes all that as clear as mud!!!!

JayDee,

Hope you don't mind the correction I made!!!  I gotta make you a top notch NavyMom you know!!!!!  Love, love the pic of your girl!!  I do hope she is enjoying her traveling and carrier life!!  I would have had a heart attack if I went through that landing like she did!!!  What an experience she is having!!! Also praying she recovered from that jellyfish!!!  Wow!!!

Well said ShawnMom!!  You are right - there is no such thing as a silly question!!!

Comment by JayDee659 on July 6, 2017 at 10:30am

I'm not sure if I told you but we have heard from her after she arrived on her carrier.   She told me that when they went in for a landing on the carrier, their plane missed the cable and they had to take back off and go for a second landing attempt!  Ugh.  She was sitting where she could hear the crew and knew what was going on but I think some of the others got a surprise.  They made a port call in Israel so we got LOTS of phone calls and pictures.  She got to go to the beach but had the unhappy surprise of a jellyfish swimming into her shorts and stinging her mercilessly until they could free him.  Poor angel!  After badgering her I finally got a picture that included her (not food).  They have left port and are out in the great big blue for now.

Tracy1120, my handwriting is horrible due to arthritis so I typed everything on Word and then digitally included pictures of her dog, stories about her high school marching band, ROTC unit, updates on the shows we watched.  One mom on here said she used to dress her daughter's dog in her clothing and send pictures!  I loved that idea but my daughter is smaller than her dog.  It all depends on the kid.  My daughter requested her senior pictures because she went from waist long hair to a pixie cut for BC and nobody believed she used to have long hair.

My girl will be in 2 years in August (wow has it been that long).  She is a Nuke, and in my experience their schooling is very different from other rates.  In any case, her rate is MMN3 (machinist mate nuclear 3rd class).  She did get some leave after A school (and went home with her new Navy boyfriend - now husband).  Hmmm, I was not thrilled but they did spend a day or two with me between his house and a friend's in Florida.

Comment by Tracy1120 on July 6, 2017 at 10:12am

JayDee659, yes I'm writing daily.  She's got 6 letters so far that I'm just waiting to mail. I've seen some people say that they send photos in their letters but are they really allowed to keep them.  My husband thinks that might make it harder for her.

How long has your daughter been in the Navy? What's her job? Do they get a leave to come home after A school?

Thanks so much for your help!
