Shared today by our ombudsman:

A SAILOR’S CHRISTMAS
Twas the night before Christmas, the ship was out steaming,
Sailors stood watch while others were dreaming.
They lived in a crowd with racks tight and small,
In an 80-man berthing, cramped one and all.
I had come down the stack with presents to give,
And to see inside just who might perhaps live.
I looked all about, a strange sight did I see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stockings were hung, shined boots closed at hand,
On the bulkhead hung pictures of a far distant land.
They had medals and badges and awards of all kind,
And a sober thought came into mind.
For this place was different, so dark and so dreary,
I had found the house of a Sailor, once I saw clearly.
A Sailor lay sleeping, silent and alone,
Curled up in a rack and dreaming of home.
The face was so gentle, the room squared away,
This was the United States Sailor today.
This was the hero I saw on TV,
Defending our country so we could be free.
I realized the families I would visit this night,
Owed their lives to these Sailors willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
And grown-ups would celebrate on Christmas Day.
They all enjoyed freedom each day of the year,
Because of the Sailor, like the one lying here.
I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
On a cold Christmas Eve on a sea, far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The Sailor awakened and I heard a calm voice,
“Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice.”
“Defending the seas all days of the year,
So others may live and be free with no fear.”
I thought for a moment, what a difficult road,
To live a life guided by honor and code.
After all it’s Christmas Eve and the ship’s underway!
But freedom isn’t free and it’s Sailors who pay.
The Sailor says to country “be free and sleep tight,
No harm will come, not on my watch and not on this night.”
The Sailor rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent so still,
I watched as the Sailor shivered from the night’s cold chill.
I didn’t want to leave on that cold dark night,
This guardian of honor so willing to fight.
The Sailor rolled over and with a voice strong and sure,
Commanded, “Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas and all is secure!"

Merry Christmas everyone! God bless all of our Sailors whether on land or at sea.

Soak up the daughter time JayDee, I know you'll love every minute - she will too!

Hoping to get a call tomorrow. Our sailor is out there somewhere. We received a note from the ship's ombudsman stating they've all been given calling cards. Every time one of our phones ring we jump but nothing yet. I know she wishes she was home and that she's thinking of us. And she knows we're sending love and thinking of her.

JayDee not terrible at all. Moms need time alone with our daughters. Enjoy...give her an extra hug from all the other Navy Moms.

Jaydee, it doesn't sound terrible at all! Enjoy the special time with your daughter without guilt:).
Bbcregular, totally agree with you.
Merry Christmas to all!

BBC regular it never is enough time is it? Now that my daughter is married I rarely get time alone with her. A whole week sounds like heaven! This is going to sound terrible but I'm kind of happy that her husband has duty when we go visit next month.

JayDee I have fought off tears all day thinking of my sailor and all the moms and families without their loved ones because of military duty. You broke me and the tears flow. I did have a week alone with my girl during Thanksgiving then two weeks with my new SIL and daughter near by. Why is it never enough? Mostly because we know the commitment they have made and I am so proud of each one even not knowing them personally I feel a deep connection. Prayers for God’s grace. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all.

If you know me then you know that my husband traveled, and after our oldest daughter went to college it was just me and my sailor for years.  When we went to church, sailor liked to sit on the end of the pew.  This quickly became habit.  After she left for boot camp I would sit at church, leaving the end space empty for her.  Sometimes a friend would sit there when their family was not with them, it made me happy that someone sat with me.  My husband is now home and he was puzzled at first but then came to accept that the end space would be left open.  Sailor is not with me but there's always a space for her in my heart.  Just as I know Jesus is always with me, I know my sailor will always love me and think of me.

It's just me and my husband this year at Christmas.  Sailor has duty tomorrow and it's unlikely that she will get to call us.  I know she's thinking of me and I look forward to seeing her next week, that will be the celebration of family for us.

Tonight we'll go to church and celebrate the birth of Jesus.  I will pray for all our military personnel whether they are home, deployed or standing watch.  I will also say a prayer for all my mom friends here who have meant so much to me.  If your sailor is not with you, know that they love and miss you.

Merry Christmas to all.
