Good morning everyone.

Anna, you crack me up! My oldest daughter's husband said the same thing - he wanted to get on a plane and kick somebody's ....! Thankfully my sailor had a better day yesterday due to a few things. First of all she and 3 other female newbies met the new CO and liked him very much. The 4 girls (all different rates) talked afterward and discovered they're all going through the same thing! They hate the negativity and have made a pact to treat the incoming sailors with respect and guidance. I love that! Also, she was able to have a "heart to heart" with a male DC3. He started to dismiss her concerns but she stood up for herself and told him that she doesn't learn by intimidation. She needs someone to take her under their wing, show her what to do so she can work well and be part of a team that's supposed to protect the whole crew/ship in case of a fire or flood emergency! If not, she won't work well and she won't learn her job and that puts them all at risk. Apparently he said, "oh.... Ok!" Guess we'll see if he really did get it and whether he'll have any influence on the "girls". Thank you everyone for your support and prayers! And in case you're wondering. Yes... she's been like that from birth! LOL

Alicia,I happened to have a conversation with a Navy dad about his daughter while mine was in boot. She'd been the object of discrimination/harassment. He made the same points that Anna and Vickyrun did. Women can be targets - civilian or military doesn't matter. We need to be smart, aware, informed, and careful wherever we are and whoever we're with. A ship is a concentrated group who work AND live together. All the more reason for caution.

Jean??? Can we uncross our fingers and toes?

cjbmom,

First - Happy Birthday to your daughter!!!  Please tell her I wish you a fantastic celebration even if it's on the QT.  So sorry she strained her ankle.  Ditto on the elevate, rest as much as she can, pain killers if she can take them, but definitely ice it as much as she can. I hope she heals quickly.

Jean,

Happy 1st birthday to beautiful Aurora!!!  Those pictures are so cute!!  Love the board your daughter made.  Any word about the job yet????  hope, hope, hope

Oleander,

The issues your daughter is going through just makes me mad!!!  What is wrong with these other women.  If they can't act better than that they don't deserve to wear that uniform.  I would tell your daughter to call them out on their behavior and tell them she is proud to wear her uniform and be a part of a team, and work well with her shipmates. All those good team building words.  And tell them if they can't behave to those same standards, she doesn't want anything to do with them!!!  She should try to make friends with the guys she works with, her other friend, and certainly the new girl that comes on board and ignore the other "kids"!!!!!  MamaBear had good words of wisdom also!  Why can't some people GROW UP?!?!?!

ok, I'm done venting on that now!!! I'd go to her ship and kick some Navy butt!!!!!

Alicia, I wouldn't say the Navy is any more dangerous for our young women than normal society, college, or even civilian workplaces.  It is a shame that it does still happen but my two girls have never had troubles like that.  She just needs to keep her head on her shoulders and keep in mind personal safety if she goes out with other sailors (never leave a drink abandoned  and never walk to car or home alone), those kind of things.  As Vickyrun said, the Navy does have training programs about sexual abuse!!!

More news later ladies but I'm going out to dinner with a Navy Mom we're visiting in Montana!!!!

Comment by Vickyrun on August 10, 2015 at 4:32pm

Alicia, unfortunately some women do get raped in all branches of the military. She is more likely to get raped by a fellow sailor then by the enemy.  The Navy is doing things to help with this such as Sexual abuse awareness month in April. But I believe it still has  along way to go. See; http://www.sfgate.com/movies/industrybuzz/article/Invisible-War-on-...

Jean your granddaughter looks so happy. Pretty pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thank you MamaBear! I sent her a text to let her know you NavyMoms are standing by her side too. I agree about your high school analogy. I know she'll come out of this stronger and wiser. She's already told me that she will befriend the next new girl who comes in about a month, she's committed to no one else being treated this way.

Comment by Oleander on August 10, 2015 at 10:08am

Thank you sypder and cjbmom. We've had many text talks. She's trying to stay positive and I've told her that it's just a test and things will change. Apparently 2 or 3 other girls of that rate have purposely separated due to this behavior. At least that's what her sponsor told her. Unfortunately sponsor leaves this week herself so she's on her own. Day by day - things will get better. Her best friend from boot & A school reported to her ship the same day & is having the time of her life - lots of team building as it's a new ship. I think the comparison magnifies her situation. Thanks for your support!

Oleander,

Oh no!! Sorry about your daughter's difficulties.  At work, we were just talking about how mean girls can be.  I hope and pray for her perseverance, tell her how proud we all are of her.  Sending ((hugs)) to you and your sailor!

Chbmom, hopefully she gets better really quick...prayers! And happy birthday to her of course!
Newbies on ships seem to frequently be ostracized...Grrr. Hope they will come around soon!
Good luck with job Jean, we are all anxiously awaiting:).
