Jappyj,

You want to start saving up for a trip to the commissioning ceremony. All commissionings are special occasions, but the commissioning of the first ship in an entirely new class is a super big deal. Not to be missed.

CryptoDad - Thanks for the information I will try to forward on to my sailor she is going to be one of 8 CS's on the ship

Jappyj,

A couple of links to the Zumwalt:

http://www.public.navy.mil/surfor/ddg1000/Documents/CO_Welcome_Aboa...

From the Captain's Welcome Aboard letter:

Congratulations on your assignment to the crew of the navy’s newest and first in its Class, guided missile destroyer, PCU ZUMWALT (DDG 1000)! ZUMWALT is currently under construction at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine and due to deliver in 2014. ZUMWALT maintains a Precommissioning detachment located at the Training Support Center in Norfolk, VA. You can expect to spend a minimum of two months at the  detachment prior to reporting to the Precommissioning Unit in Bath, ME. Based on current construction progress and delivery plans, crew members can expect to be in Maine through most of 2015. Sailors with families are encouraged to bring them to Maine.ZUMWALT's eventual homeport has not been finalized, but sanDiego is the planned homeport with arrival there expected in mid-to-late 2016.

FYI - The commanding officer is Captain James Kirk. No kidding.

jappyj,

Ditto spyder's comments - congratulations to both your awesome sailors!!!!  I hope when it's all said and done you can share with us what she will be doing!!!!!  My curiosity is piqued!!!!  Will keep your son in my prayers for his safety as I do for all our service men and women!!  My son, unfortunately, is getting ready for another deployment.  All I know so far is that he won't be going back to Afghanistan this time!!!

CatMom509,

Oh I do understand how they can be attached to their favorites.  I thought the same thing about the hair brush my daughter wanted sent - I figured for sure she would have picked up a brush in boot, but it wasn't HER brush!!!!!   LOL that's our sailors!!!!
