Elane L, thank you for the info! I live in FL but my SR lived in AZ prior to enlistment. He has a girlfriend there so I just assumed he would go to AZ if he did get holiday leave anyway LOL Ahh the joys of kids growing up! My son went in as a certified welder, so this rate makes total sense for him. Eventually he would like to learn underwater welding.. I'm sure the Navy has something like that, right?
MsKnow, for my Hull Tech, it means fixit guy. with the specialty of welding or pipes. (plumbing). he's been in 6 years now and this is his 2nd ship assignment, He's been on a first responder type squad on both ship. If it breaks, that squad is 1st there. Then they go from there of who fixes what. I think. Mine was in A school over the holidays, but we lived 8 hr drive from him so got to "bring" him home for the holidays. Hold time varied with the schools, for mine BECC/A school was about 6 weeks long. But the biggest thing I can tell you is he's on Navy time now...when/where/whenever they want whatever. So there really is no "normal". sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear.
Thanks for the info J's Wife! I was afraid he was going to have hold time! Will this mean that he won't have any leave during the holidays?
Hello! My SR's PIR is Nov. 22nd and he's supposed to stay in GL for A-School. I'm trying to find out more about his rate (or is it rating?) He said he's a "Hull Tech". TIA for any info!
hello moms
hi my sailor just finished strand school. he told me that they are barely starting to get orders to the backed up sailors that were put on hold because of the gov shutdown.
HT's have to go through BECC (Basic Engineering Common Core) before they can continue on to Strand school. BECC is closed down right now due to the recent furlough. The place the HT strand takes their tests is also closed down right now. My husband is in HT strand right now; once they reach a point where they need to take a test, they may be placed on hold until the test is able to be taken (they have not been briefed on that situation yet, though). The office that hands out orders is also rumored to be closed (don't know for sure), so even the classes that are graduating from strand are on hold until they are given orders. The HT instructors are known for their amazing work, though. I have complete faith in them, as does my husband, that they will do everything in their power to help the students succeed. All of the recreational facilities (besides the library) on base are running as planned, though. Students should have plenty to do.
Some suggestions to pass the time:
Volunteer- the sailors ship would have information on volunteer opportunities. Sailors get a ribbon for their uniforms once they reach 50 volunteer hours, enjoy some time away from the ship, and volunteer hours are looked at when promotions come up.
Visit the ITT office (located in the student NEX) or Liberty (located in the Loft, or gym)- both of these places have excellent information/discounts/resources for recreational activities. Activities can be found by accessing www.mwrgl.com, picking up a "FUN TIMES" newspaper on base, or by visiting one of the mentioned places.
I know some people are discouraged, but there is still plenty to do in this area and plenty of work to be done. The Navy will figure it out. Everyone spends some amount of time on hold, anyway. (My husband spent 3 weeks on hold before starting BECC.) Let me know if you have any other questions, I may be able to answer.
