@ JenniferP, HT A & C school is at Great Lakes, depends on how many they have waiting for the class to begin one. Glad he isn't have to wait too long.
OK HT mom's. My son's PIR was July 10th. It is now July 31st he has yet to start A school. How long do they usually have to wait before they begin classes?
@HuffyMom23 yes and No...
there are several ways for them to be in Japan.
1. is they get assigned to a ship that is "home ported" there or land based there.
2. they are assigned to a ship that is "hull swapping" with another ship already assigned there. (it's been mentioned that the GW is hull swapping with another carrier) not sure what ship you son is on right now. or if that is the case of the destroyer he's on.
3. they go visit Japan with a ship that is "hull swapping" but they come back on that swapped ship.
hull swapping is where the Navy transfers 1 ship for another and that other port becomes it's new "home port". Not ALL the crew stay with either ship..
for example...when my son was sent to J..he was going to be part of the Cowpens crew that was in Yokosuka. Full knowledge that the Cowpens was swapping with the Antietam. When this happened alot of the Cowpens crew became the new Antietams crew and the old Antietam crew became the new Cowpens crew...and they sailed the Cowpens back to San Diego. The Navy doesn't like to pay for more full moves than they need too. So swapping a lot or most of the crew when they relocate a ship, they save some money as the households goods/families are already there.
The best I can say is IF you can get your son to tell you whether he's going to be relocated to Japan OR is going temporarily. ...I can't get mine to tell me much of anything.
hopefully I've not confused you too much.
Elane, if my son is already with a destroyer that is going over there, won't he most likely stay with that ship? I did not realize there were lots of naval bases in Japan. I bet you are ready for him to come back stateside.
@HuffyMom23, There are lots of Naval bases in Japan. as a Hull tech I imagine he will also be assigned to a ship.. there is a fleet of those there. Mine is at Yokosuka Naval Station with the USS Antietam. for a couple more months anyway, til he gets to come back stateside.
Elane - I don't know where he is going in Japan. I guess I thought the Navy all went to the same place. I just never asked him.
Yes he was upset it was totaled, but now he has his fathers truck for the next year. My husband takes very good care of all our vehicles, and told my son he better take good care of it too. It is a 2002 but still looks really good. So having the truck has taken his mind off of the motorcycle somewhat. ha
@HuffyMom23...sorry for the delay in reply. I'm glad your was "legal" with the motorcycle training, lack of almost cost mine dearly. Sorry about his "ride". Glad he's okay!!!!!! and big $ from insurance is good. Where is he going in Japan?
Elane - my son did take the motorcycle course through the Navy and he took a 3 day course here at home before he left for boot camp. As he was pulling away from a stop sign, his back tire hit a wet spot since it had rained earlier in the day. I think it fishtailed and that is when he laid it down. It all happened in the middle of the road, so luckily he didn't damage any navy property. ha He did get a good settlement from insurance, so he can put a big chunk of change into his savings. All he was trying to do was run to the ATM to get money for supper. He said he almost didn't go, and wishes now he would have stayed home.
Thanks for your information about Japan. I hope once he goes over there he enjoys it.
