OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Comment by Elane on December 13, 2014 at 7:52pm: @HuffyMom23 mine has been in Japan for 2 but he only lived on the ship until he could get a place. He has a nice house off base... but some do live on the ship or in Yokosuka area, live on a barge if the ship is going renovations. There is housing but I'm not sure how long the waiting list is for that. Glad your's was not seriously injured in the Motorcycle incident. If he has not had riding/safety training thru or with the Navy...it's a could thing that he isn't planning on riding any time soon. They can be real nasty, if you "injure Navy property" without the proper training/safety courses being taken...NO matter how long they may have been riding. There are a ton of apps that seemingly work with smart phones that communication can happen without those huge international rates stacking up. Mine won't/hasn't used them so not sure on all of them. I don't have a smart phone so I'm not sure which ones work with what. but they will have to get a phone in Japan, US phones don't work there. some have computers or smart phones and when on "wi-fi" it's not at the International rates.
Conservative...can be a good thing...get in less trouble that way just have him follow his head/heart and not let peer pressure....mess with him.

Comment by HuffyMom23 on December 12, 2014 at 9:43pm: Elane - I can't imagine living on the ship for 2 years. ha I guess that is why I didn't join the Navy. My son is very conservative. He likes working out, listening to music, and he was enjoying riding his motorcycle. He had a mishap the night before Thanksgiving and he no longer has the bike. He was so upset, but thankfully he was okay. Just banged up a little bit. He was so cautious on it, but something happened that made him lay it down. Now he is taking his fathers truck back after his time off at Christmas. He will keep it until he goes to Japan. So he will not really have any big bills while he is there, so hopefully he can save money. He is not a facebook child, so hopefully he will at least Skype us. He is so old-fashioned for a 19 year old. ha I always told him he was an old man in a young kids body. :)

Comment by Elane on December 12, 2014 at 11:33am: @Jennifer PIR 12/05/14. NO HT's do not all go to Japan. HT is Hull Tech, specializes in welding and pipes. They go to any ship in the fleet. mine spent 3 years in San Diego before going to Japan, for 2 years, now he's going back to school for some advanced training and a stateside shore duty assignment.

@HuffyMom23 I think my son likes it okay, we got to go visit him this past March, it's not cheap there but it's Not outrageously expensive, either. Depending on what your son likes to do, whether or not he can save money. Mine did not get a car.. because trains go everywhere and walks between train stations. Mine is high enough that he could live off base. The newer ones tend to live on the ship or a some sort of housing on base. there are explore opportunities IF they take them.
Communication opportunities are also there, Skype, IM etc. FB is sometimes available even on ship deployments. Again IF they take them... My SON is not a communicator so I don't hear from him to my liking but others I know of do.

Comment by HuffyMom23 on December 3, 2014 at 9:48pm: So for you ladies who have sons in Japan, do they like it over there? My son will be going there in 2016 for 2 years. We are hoping while he is there that he will be able to save some money. I don't know if there are lots of things for them to blow their money on or not.

Also, when they are in Japan, do you hear much from them? We talk to him a lot now, so I can't imagine when it will come to a halt.

Comment by SheilaD on November 23, 2014 at 9:33pm: My son has been HT-ATF for 3 years. Dud C school in San Diego and now he's in Japan, in Yokosuka. He likes it! (HT2) I think they do very well when they leave the Navy. I'm not sure if he'll stay in or not!

Comment by Elane on November 23, 2014 at 7:33pm: @HuffyMom23, welcome , mine has been a HT for 7 1/2 years. he's the HT1 on a ship in Japan now, but is due to come back go to school again in GL and then go to a hopefully shore assignment sometime in 2015. He wanted to be a welder out of HS so that is why he signed up as a HT, but has found it's more than welding, it's fixing pipes and other metal as well.
