Petra, no problem!  I am not on this site everyday either.  Yes, my son is enjoying Navy life so far - if it would just stop snowing & being so cold!

seasport - Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but haven't been on this site in a few days. I am glad J's wife already answered your question about transportation to volunteer jobs. I hope your son is enjoying Navy Life. I know my son is. I think he was born to be a sailor. I am so proud of him and I am sure you are too.

seasport- Congrats to your son! My husband volunteered through his barracks. He just had to ask one of the higher ups. If that's what he chooses to do, they tell him where to meet and will transport him to and from. He can only do it when he's not in a class, though. So, I would have him ask soon. My husband's barracks only did one a week. Also, we were told that the volunteer work would look good for promotion, so, that's a plus. My husband just enjoyed taking a day off work party to go help in some other way, though. Any other time he wants transportation, they have cabs on base during certain hours.

Petra - thanks for the info!  What a whirlwind of a PIR weekend!  It all worked out well.  We got him an IPAD with Wifi on his AT&T account.  We spent most of the time shopping for what he needed.  He starts school Feb. 12th.  I guess that's BECC.  How did your son get transportation to/from places for his volunteer work?

seasport - I brought a few civilian clothes/shoes. I just brought what I thought he might want and then he picked out what he wanted. Remember, they don't have a lot of room and everything has to fit in their locker. Just check with your sailor. He will be able to tell you what he can or cannot have.

seasport - My son's PIR was 1/3/14. His A school is on hold for about 8 - 12 weeks, give or take. He has done some volunteer work already (animal shelter, food pantry) Next time he will go play Bingo with Senior citizens. He likes it well. He has a laptop and an ipod. Wifi is available but will cost. I think he said it's $35 a month. I am not sure if there is free wifi. That's all I know. Hope it helped a little. Someone else might have more info.

If my sailor is on hold before BECC & decides to do volunteer work, will transportation be provided?  Also, I think buying him an IPAD would be a better idea than him using his laptop.  Does anyone have any ideas on that?  I know it would be more portable, but also easier to misplace or get stolen.  Is there free WiFi at the library if he needs to print something?  I am assuming there are printers available.  His PIR is Jan. 24th.  I am trying to decide what to take him. Will he be rooming with 3 other guys during A school?  Any info is appreciated!!

Springwaterhouse- While students are on hold they spend their days cleaning the ship and are in a rotation for duty days. They have the opportunity to volunteer for local organizations on certain days of the week. They still get paid and have liberty on weekends and evenings (according to what liberty phase they're in). Every student has always had some sort of hold time, while waiting for classes to fill up, so it's fairly normal. My husband was told they fill up the BECC classes according to the first letter of their last name. Our last name is toward the beginning. So, he waited 2 weeks to start BECC, then 3 weeks for HT school to start. Do you have any other questions?

For those with students on hold for longer amounts of time- encourage them to look into volunteer work early. They can earn a ribbon for so many hours of volunteering. Also, my husband volunteered for a few places and actually really loved it. He got out of the days' cleaning of the ship and got to leave base and be in the civilian world for the day. He really enjoyed himself, but they didn't tell him it was an option until the end of his time at GL.

My son PIR'd on Nov 22nd and he also said he's on hold till at least January.  He is able to take leave during stand down, so that's good.
