@MommaMarsha,
sorry, for the delay in response. Erik took a smart phone with him. But it was shut off of service from here. The plan was for him to get internet connection at his place when he could in Japan. I believe he did that.. DON'T know the costs, but he's a gamer so I'm sure he found someway to hook up his laptop to service. He does live off base in a house, and his internet/data plan also allows him to connect his phone to facebook. BUT he is really NOT a communicator and has yet to call me but I get emails from time to time, never really answering ALL my questions. Sorry! I understand Skype works from their laptops and phones but mine won't. I've heard the app "Viber" is nice, but I think it takes smart phone to smart phone. Wish mine would of taken more time to investigate into Magic Jack, hear that's free but activated from here..but all I could get from him was "Mom I'm going to the land of technology..I'm sure they've figured out to communicate from there.
also mine was on an "LSD" his last ship. He is not part of the "Gator Navy" on this ship. They spent a lot of time hauling the Marines around.
Hi there I haven't been on here in over a year :) Just wanted to pop in and say hi and update where we stand. We are now stationed in San Diego CA. & My husband is on the USS Makin Island. Glad to see many others connected to HT's. <3 my HT
Hi All,
My son just had his PIR and is now at GL for A-school for HT. I see your comments about those stationed in Japan. Half of my family lives in Japan and we keep in contact a few different ways (for free) First, internet is definitely recommended: we use facebook. Also, you can skype for free, if you both have skype accounts and internet access; skype allows you to voice call or video call from your computer. On our phones we use an app called "Line." All of us were able to download it to our phones for free. We haven't run into data charges here, and my relatives in Japan asked us to download it so they could text, send pics and videos for free. Hope that helps! Best wishes for you all!
@Mamma Marsha Congrats to you and your sailor. yes..let the adventure begin. My HT is in Japan (since Dec). I don't hear from him enough, I am hearing that the Magic jack or Vontage is a better way to communicate. I'm also hearing that those need to be activated stateside. Might be something to look into before he goes to Japan so he can take it with?
Enjoy your time with him. What ship is he headed to?
There are several groups on here of Japan Mom's and on Facebook as well, that are supportive. We are all in this together.
SheilaD- Thanks! I am getting really excited for PIR. Have my room booked, so I'm ready to go now! lol And our communication hasn't been bad at all. I had prepared myself for the worst, but I write him at least once a day and when I get my letters, he has usually written me daily. Those little lines of communication have been so nice. Was your son able to get started in his A school right after boot, or was there a hold or anything?
Hello, J's Wife! I hope your husband does well in boot camp - it 's a tough 8 weeks, but most of them do just fine! I wrote to my son every day - kept a note pad in the car and wrote to him throughout the day. He loved the letters - he even wrote back! Keep your cell phone handy, in case he gets a chance to call.
HIs A school lasted from October 21, 2011 to Feb 24th, 2012. He came home for about 10 days after A school, before being sent to his ship, in San Diego.
PIR will come very soon - enjoy it! It's such a proud, beautiful day!
Hello! My husband is currently in boot right now. His PIR is 6/28 and then he will be staying at Great Lakes to become an HT. :)
