Dakota's Mom, I would look into the Navy Lodge first as the rates are more steady and do not fluctuate as much with seasons. Also you will be right on base so he is not needing to get a shuttle etc to meet you off base. It generally takes around 4-6 weeks for them to phse up to having overnight liberty. I went when Chris was at 4 weeks and he was not completely phased up so he had to leave the Navy Lodge around 11:55 to be back at barracks at midnight. We did not realize the first night that someone made a mistake and had him listed as fully phased up, so technically he could have spent the entire weekend with us, but he did the honest thing and reported back at night and then got it resolved the following day.

Eight hours away? I think I would go ahead and mail a box of things for the immediate and then once he is phased up take other things during your visit. Remember that anything you take or send must be removed from his room when he leaves the schools. Also they must sometimes move to another wing or building...don't want them to have to drag too much around. My son is a collector...for every one thing I sent to him he bought two things. He entered DN with one seabag and pack but left with the trunk of his car filled, his back seat full and my trunk 1/2 filled! And still managed to leave his dress shoes!

Also, does anyone know how soon they have weekend liberty? He doesn't know as of this morning. I'm trying to decide if I mail his things or take them to him. I'm about 8 hrs from VA beach.

Mom2kandq, My son just arrived there last night. We hope to go visit soon. Do you have suggestions for lodging?

It's fun seeing a new group of Sailors going to IS.  My daughter was driving the duty van a few weekends ago and had to make 5 trips to the airport to pick up a very large group (compared to her group in March).  Good luck to all.  I recommend visiting if you can.  Virginia Beach is a pretty nice area.  And after Labor Day the hotel rates drop tremendously.

ProudMaMa - sent you a message as well.

The sailors will have a black backpack that they will carry on to the plane with them.  Their sea bags will most likely be inaccessable.

You have two choices when meeting up with him.

#1 bring things he wants, laptop, phone, etc. and he will stuff it into his backpack.

#2 bring a plain black backpack, no logos, no color, no designs, loaded with the things he wants and give it to him at the airport. He can transfer items from his issued backpack to the new one. (we did this)

We put his laptop, phone, chargers, snacks, jeans, sleep shorts, a t-shirt, (and some decent underwear!) into the backpack.  It was all fine.

ProudMaMa, the flights may originate from O'Hare or Midway but tend to be from O'Hare. My son's flight to DN was at around 10:00 on Sunday morning but the bus left bc for the airport at like 6am. Some sailors leave on Friday after PIR and some on Sat or even Monday or Tuesday following PIR. I just took my son's iPod, cell phone and running shoes to him at the airport. We were not yet sure he could keep his laptop so I brought it back home and shipped it a couple of days later with some clothes. He could have taken it, but we thought better safe than sorry. We were also able to take another sailor his cell phone as his parents were flying out very early from Midway. You might be able to connect with another sailor's family in your PIR group or division who can get your sailor's items to him. Do however remember that whatever you give at the airport must be able to fit into an already stuffed seabag.

I didn't get a message. Hmm? Well the flights out of Ohare can be at anytime. Ryan flight was at 3:05pm. They will fly into Norfolk Virginia.
