My boyfriend is in BC right now. I just got his PIR date. He will be staying in GL for dive prep. Will he get any extra liberty in between BC and dive prep? Im trying to schedule flights and time off of work. His letters haven't started coming yet. Not many people know about the diving community, from what I understand its very small.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

@lovemyDiver, My son went right from BC to Diver prep,he did get to come home for Christmas.  His PIR was on a friday we got to see him Fri - Sun. The hours where from 7am -10pm. They like to be back earlier then 10pm so they dont get in trouble. I hope this helps.

Hi LoveMyDiver,

How are you? My son is a Diver at Little creek base.Gradauted from Dive school in April 2011. It one of the toughest program. Well for his PIR you will have the weekend with him but he needs to be back on base at a certain time. If he is late then his whole unit has to suffer and he will not be able to leave base the next day. The Navy is very strict with those rules. Then the following week they usually go across street to Dive prep which is hard core training. If they do not have enough divers to start class its a waiting game. Alot of divers get sick the first month cause the training is so much more intense at dive prep. That is where they weed the weak ones out. My son class started with 26 and only 12 made it to panama city for Dive school. After a month of Dive prep I was able to see my son and he was able to be off base for the weekends. I made two trips during dive prep so he could have his weekends with family. It really helps with their mental emotions. Please send him lots of Airborne, protein bars and shakes it keeps immune system healthy. The program is very very mental. I would speak to my son and only speak in positive messages. He also did lots of mediatation. They wake up at 4am and they do not stop till 8pm. When he gets to Panama city it gets better more relax. I know its hard for couples but just keep at his side and let him know you are there for whatever he needs to talk about . Thats all they need is someone to talk to while going through Dive prep. Hope this helps. Takecare,

Liza

I'm good thank you for asking. Im kinda used to being alone already. Congrats on your son making it! I have no worries that My man will make it. He is very strong and I swear he is part fish. I have been told to make sure he is on time for curfew during PIR. His Maternal side of the family are going to PIR. She wont let him break rules or get in trouble. Im not going to be able to get back out to GL before he is out of dive prep. I've been in one military relationship before. I was young and in high school. I was with him through bootcamp and his A school. He was a Nuke. Im excited My SR is going to be in A school in PC because I'm from Florida.

Okay so here are my main questions:

How long is Dive Prep?

How long is A-School?

When can I start sending him care packages? - I know its a big big no gpo for boot camp but I want to make sure he will be okay and as comfortable as possible while in dive prep.

Will he be able to have his cell phone or computer during dive prep?

Hi,

Dive prep is around 2 months ans A school is about 4 months. It all depends if he does not get sick or have any injuries. He can have his cell phone and laptop at dive prep. When he gets there he will let you know what his address is. Hope this help. Good luck

First letter just came in from BC. SOOOO Exciting! He did ask for a simple digital black waterproof watch. Am I allowed to send this to him or will he get in trouble for it? Who can i contact at RTC to double check. I really dont want to get him in trouble.

Hi,

I used to man my mailbox on Wednesdays for letters from my son. Just use plain white paper to write letters. I send my son a card from Mexico and his instructor had him do extra push ups. From what I know they cannot have anything until he gets to Dive prep. I was not allow to send anything cause they paid the price or their units paid the price. For right now just send him a letter every week until he graduates. Takecare

My son left Sunday for Bootcamp.  He is a diving recruit.   So it appears from the conversations I am reading that after boot camp, dive prep is still located in Great Lakes....right?    I so hope he makes it.   He wants it so bad, but I know the fail rate is high.    I want it bad for him.   Anyone else have a son that is just at a recruit stage?

Hi Felicia,

Dive Prep is in Great Lakes right across the street from RTC. The time it will last varies depending on when the actual Dive Prep class starts. The drop rate is quite high however its a big mind game for the most part. The instructors test the guys everyday mentally and physically. My diver made it all the way to PC and was part of the first class to keep everyone who went to PC.

Good luck to your son. Keep in mind to read the rules for the page. A lot of the RDC's at bootcamp will look on this website from time to time and can use info here to mess with the recruits. Your son will most likely be in a 800 division and will be held to a higher standard and treated a little rougher but it will all be worth it. Keep your eyes peeled for the Box. It totally made my week when I got it, and I refused to wash his clothes (gross i know) but they smelt like him and It was a comfort to me lol.

Thanks for your reply.  I totally understand the not washing his clothes thing.  I told him when he was at home over and over and over, that it would be his mental strenght that kept him in, not so much his physical strength.  He is physically fit, but I know they push them mentally.   I have not had contact with him for only four days, and some days I am okay, but today..I have just been crying.   He has only been away from me 3 weeks before, but I had contact with him.

It's a very hard program. It all depends on what they are really pushing for. A lot of guys fail school tests but as far as physical goes its
the everyday PT or individual tests like to clear their mask. There is so much they go up against its hard to say what can fail them or hold them back. Every class is different.
I have to say I am very proud of m guy. He was part of one of the first classes in PC history to not lose a single guy. They graduated with the exact men they started with. Hooyah!

My son just arrived in PC yesterday. I believe he said they should be able to class up because they have 10 sailors who made it to PC.  Can any one give me some insight on what to expect for the next couple of weeks/months?  I'm extremely proud of him but miss him terribly.  I know the prep school was tough, both physically and mentally, because they were preparing the best of the best. Is dive school that much harder?  Thanks for the information in advance!
