Hello everyone.

My son is currently in BC and will be going to Dive Prep next month.  Can anyone tell me what they are allowed to have during their training?    Since we didn't have Christmas together, I'll be giving him a few gifts after PIF but I don't want to give anything he can't keep there.  Any and All input and ideas are REALLY APPRECIATED!

Are they allowed to have any personal:  clothing? hygiene items? food/snacks?  Any other ideas of what to give to him is greatly appreciated.

Inaipaul, where is your son deployed?

Comment by Marie ~ Proud Diver Mom on January 13, 2013 at 8:51pm

LadyHawk, I think our sons are together.  Mine is ship04Div806, PIF 2/8/13.  I was able to benefit from your questions below, thank you (and you, Inaipaul).

Hi,

Ladyhawk Yeah they do come out a different person. They can be cocky but they have to be that way. Sometime I have to let my son know that he is speaking to his mother and not one of his other sailors . They had to learn to be independent thinkers at a young age so mentally they do grow alot. My son is on his first deployment cannot wait for him to come home.

@ LadyHawk...mine gained 6 pounds.  He was thin going in.  Some boys did lose weight, but honesly most of the boys who make the 800 division are not really overweight anyway, otherwise they would not be there.   Some lose, some gain some muscle.  My son did not look different.   Most were really glad to see family.  Bootcamp is not a vacation.   During dinner, he was kinda quiet.   But  you should attend one of the meet and greets the night before graduation.  They are very informative and they tell you what to expect.   They are not allowed to talk while eating so they don't come out of there talking your leg off.    I went to Sarges meet and greet.   He was great, very informative.   He also has a taxi service and gives you the number to give your sailor.   He takes care of them when they need a ride.   Many of those Taxi guys in GL are con artists.

@ LadyHawk...your recruit can order you a set of pictures when they order.  They are about 140.00 for a set.   He can order him a set and you a set when he has the pictures taken.  They will be able to pick the ones they order up before graduation.

However, my son, did not order me any even tho I told him too, because they were so expensive.   You are able to order you some pictures the day of graduation next door to the NEX.   You order the ones you want, pay for them and then wait about 20 min and then pick them up.   Now the DVD of the ceremony you can order there too, but it takes 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.

@ladyhawk..if your Sailor does not buy pictures, you can buy them the day of PIR next door to the Nex.   They tell you to wait about 20 min and then you can take the pictures you ordered with you.    The DVD of the graduation can be purchased at that time too, and it take about 6 to 8 weeks.   They will also have a order form if you want to take it with you and order them later.  However, they are only available to order only so long after graduation.

Hi Ladyhawk,

Happy new year. My son did not get pics because it was expensive. I think they pay for it out of their own money. my son is very cheap lol. My son was home for about 2 weeks and then left 1st week in january for PC. I did not go to dive prep graduation because my son said it was no big deal. I think only 2 parents showed up. Dive school in PC is the graduation you want to go to because thats when they become a Navy Diver.Hope this helps. Takecare My son is currently deployed and will be home in 2 months can,t wait.

Hi Ladyhawk,

When my son was in bootcamp I got only 2 calls but did receive letters everyweek on Wednesdays . If someone does not do there job in bootcamp alot of times the whole division suffers. If you write letters only on white paper I sent my son a postcard from mexico and he was given extra pushups for that I know its very tough but in the end you will see a different young man. After bootcamp he went over to dive prep there is usually no breaks because they have to get to work or they may just have to wait on a class to form. Myson waited a week in order for others to graduate bootcamp. They need a certain amount of soldiers to get a class started. They may get a break after graduating dive prep. My son was home for Christmas and then left for PC for Dive school. I hope this helps. Takecare and God bless.
