Inaipual-I get to go to Little Creek in September to see my son.  Very excited.  Any recommendations on great places to eat?   Once your son moves out into town he will get housing allowance plus another allowance for food.  That is good he is going to take classes.  My husband has let the Navy pay for his degree and now he is almost done with his masters.

mamasan-my son thought it was physically challenging through the whole school.  I don't know if it was his instructors but it was rough through the whole thing.  He didn't mind it though as a new day usually brought a new challenge.

Week one down for dive school...he says its really tough but when I talk to him, he sounds really invigorated, you know?  He's having some aches and pains, and we've recommended hot baths and epsom salts...  I'm praying that he stays strong this next week...the first two are the worst physically, right? He's a brainiac, so should be okay on the academics.  It just keeps getting harder and harder...Lady Hawk, I think I'm more like you...like to know what he's going through...

Hi ,

I visited my son at little creek for first time on Thursday. It is beautiful in virginia beach. Luke Byant gave a free concert for the guys on base. I think that was nice. I will be looking for a place for my son in September. Its very hard for him to save because he has to buy breakfast, lunch and dinner so your paycheck goes to food. It is better to live off base so they can use their housing allowance for rent and food.My son also has signed up for classes at coastline community college. He is hoping to get his degree in marine biology. They is an advisor on base if your boys need to further their education. My son is only ninteen so I am pushing him to take advantage of all the opportunities the navy has to offer. You might as well do it while they are young lol.

LadyHawk-It is good that you research for your diver. My son seems to know what is ahead of him during Pool Week so I am not helpful for him there. I love your "grizzly and her cubs" comparison..right on!

JapanMom-knots in the stomach are exactly what I feel! I know my son will do his very best and do well, but like you, I would prefer to not know about it!

Bensmom-I agree with you.  I didn't want to know what they were doing.  Ignorance is bliss!!!!!!!!!!  After the fact he did tell me some of things he had to do and it just made knots in my belly just trying picture it.  I don't mind the water but definately I am fearful of it.  I am recreational diver qualified and that was enough for me.  My husband wanted me to take the advance course but I politely declined and decided I only like to dive in warm, clear and not see deep.

Mamasan-I do live in Japan.  My husband is stationed at Atsugi and then I have two sons in.  My oldest is the diver that just made it to Little Creek and my other son just started bootcamp and will go to school for CTR.

Donna-My sons girlfriend is moving up and they are going to rent a place together.  Right now he has to stay in the barracks for about three months before he gets to move out in town.  We are going to visit our son in September.  Super excited as I have never been over to Little Creek.  I love to go new places!

Donna-thanks for your advice. Yes, I am dreading pool week, too. They can be pretty harse, esp if they become unconscious underwater. I am so very proud of my son and all the other divers and divers-to-be. It is a tough rate but my son loves it.

LadyHawk- Thanks for the suggestion on watching "surviving the cut." I have seen it and, for some reason, it makes me cringe to see what they go through. My husband loved it though. I guess it is the protective mother in me that comes out and I have even told my son, who is in Dive school, not to tell me certain things because I have a hard time with it. Silly, isn't it?

Mamasan - The hotel on base is like a five star hotel. Its really nice the only thing is that they have to clean there own room .

Second day in...my son's class' is being housed in the hotel on base..  I guess Panama City must be a bit different than GL, huh?  lol.  I really appreciate the activity on this board, great to hear from you about all the different phases of this process.

Japan, so, you have two boys in?  Where does the Japan come in? Do you live there? Maybe I should let you be mamasan...smile.  I hope he waits to take his first liberty at Christmas.  We will all be there for graduation and the weekend following, and I think his grad will fall right before Thanksgiving...so, not long to wait.  Japan Mom, what will your son be doing?  Sorry if you already said, I was out of touch a bit for the past couple of weeks..
