Been to the Islands several times and each time they get more and more "touristy". More people, more of everything. People from all over the world are moving there and the Islands are running out of prime space. People are now building houses (lots od houses) up the slopes of the mountains, whether it be Haleakala or Diamond Head and continue to build more and more shopping areas. Although the roads are not being "enlarged" to acommodate the traffic as quickly as one might think, the mainland still ships in automobiles at a fast rate. The beautiful, quiet Islands are soon to be no more. I have seen it happening faster than I would have imagined. It is really too bad since it is one of the most beautiful places we have been. If it weren't for the locals, we wouldn't be able to find the places that are still as they were 100 years ago.

I thought there were a lot of XX's displaying many attributes on that big blvd by all those expensive stores. Now, mom's rating on XXs and son's rating on XXs do not coincide. Wherever he has been (East Coast, West Coast, Island), there seems to be plenty of XX's. A lot of XX's just love a man in a uniform. Remember the old Ricky Nelson song "Traveling Man"?
I have a large extended family in SD.Sister is in Del Mar. Nephews in La Jolla. Brother in Huntington Beach. I love So. Cal.

NavyMomXXXY,
Simple. You have an XX and I have an XY. The pool of available XXs near Waikiki is greater than available XYs. When we were with him in May (he was working - we got him for two full days and one dinner), his phone was constantly ringing. Mmmmmm....

LOL, good motto! I think I will adopt that when my children are grown and out of the house :D

My husband would say, "Just make sure that local entertainment does not become a permanent fixture." I am staying totally out of that loop. On certain issues, nothing good can ever come out of mom's recommendations. Know no evil, see no evil, hear no evil, think no evil - that has been my motto. Gag!

Its a great website for anyone of our military members to use! I am sure the beaches and um dare I say, the local entertainment factors along the strips of beach and ocean I am sure were deciding factors there! lol
Other websites to look at: www.militaryonesource www.navyonestop.com

Excellent, Rebecca.
Found the site. Click HERE for Automatic Housing Referral Network.
Our son did everything on his own. He wanted to be with other officers at Charleston. Now in Hawaii, he wouldn't consider anything other than a studio by himself near Wikiki. I wonder why?

Also, I would like to add, that the Navy Base Housing Office will also have a list of rentals and off base housing. Your Sailors should start with them, for the know the community, or should, and will be able to direct our sailors in the right direction to finding themselves a good area and home.

Actually the Navy has a website for sailors and their families to use to look for rentals, houses to buy, sell etc.. The website is AHRN.com Not all bases are using this site, but I would think that California is on there. Its an excellent site for our sailors, b/c is mostly military trying to rent to other military. BUT, it also has a lot of rentals on there that will either wave or discount security deposits, credit checks, pet deposits etc...... Please refer your sailors off to their Ombudsmans, whom are a wealth of information and referral service to them.

Great info, Bea and I really like the idea of the sub groups. Maybe we could add overseas like Japan because there are a lot of sailors there, too.
