Welcome Grace, a lot of your questions should be able to be answered here. But first I think we need to know, did he join as undesignated and in BC now. Or is he undesignated as a result of something else? I can help you with answers if he went in undesignated, that's what my daughter did.
Glad you joined us.

I agree, till I found this group It was always hard to say the dreaded word "Undesignated". But once you hear all the different stories and happy endings you find out that is really a great way to go.
This group is so supportive and informative. Thanks everyone.

Ding! DIng! Ding!.....you are right again, he can go work with the recruiters when he is back. I forgot about that.
Tara left for BC 8/14 her time there was 8 weeks, so her timing worked out for the Thanksgiving time. My son's BC was the full 10 weeks. It all depends when the divisions fill up.

Hi Molly, Yes they do get to take time off. You are correct, they have not earned those days, but they are allowed to take (I believe) 10 days. But then they are in the hole and owe however many days they took. Once they earn the days back that they took then they can start to build up their time.
Tara took the full 10 days because it was around Thanksgiving. But they don't have to take the full 10. That way they only owe what they took.
I hope I have made sense.

Welcome Dee, Sounds like your son is taking things in stride. My son is a Nuke, I know how tuff the school is. Sometimes these things that happen are for the best. My sons friend from high school also went in as a Nuke and did not get to finish. He went on to sub school and, I forget what job he has now, but he loves what he is doing. When he and my son compare there jobs his friend is so glad that he got out of being a nuke. My son is on a sub also. I believe the Navy has a way of getting these kids to the right job for them. No matter how it happens.
My daughter went in undesignated and loves what she is doing. Although she needs to get rated pretty soon. She is on her way back from deployment now.
It all works out in the end. Just tell you son to patient and keep encouraging him. Your right the Navy life is something we all need to get used to. Your really can't plan in advance, and patients is a must.

Welcome Carlaaa, Sorry to hear of the troubles you two are having. I really have no advice about his leave. That unfortunately will be a wait and see game for a while. I hope all works out for the wedding.
I wouldn't worry about the undesignated part, at least he is still in the navy. He will do fine. Although he may be a little disappointed, just keep supporting him. He will be fine.

Yea Camilla!!! Thanks for all you helpful information and welcome.
Tara is coming home from her 6 month at the end of July. She is undesignated on the USS Boxer assigned with the ACU5 LCAC's. (Aircraft Unit 5, Landing Cushion Air Craft). SHe has had on exciting deployment chasing Pirates!!!
I know she does a lot of different things while out there. And I will know more when I see her (which by the way I CAN NOT WAIT FOR).
But while assigned to Pendleton she had a few different jobs there that she had requested to try out. Then requested to go on deployment. She had to qualify for a few things before she could go. So she is always learning something new.I will say that for her so far it has been a good thing to be undes, because she was an 18 your old going in the Navy without a clue of what she wanted to do. And to her 2 years at a job that maybe she would not like was was to long. So this way she could check a few out first. And in the meantime she is getting all sorts of experiences.
I'm just not sure, and that is where you may come in Camilla, is there a time where you need to be rated? I thought someone said you have to be rated within 2 years. She will be in 2 in August. I am assuming that she knows what's going on but it's me that is not sure. Like I said, I am hoping to get a lot of my questions answered (hugs) when I see her in a few weeks. And I can't wait to see her ESWS pin!

Wow, have I missed a lot of good stuff. Congratulations to everyone for all the accomplishments that I read about. And welcome to all the new friends on here.
I have been out of the loop with everything. I had to stop my life and go to NJ to help my Mom and Aunt who are both in their 80's. It has not been a real fun time.
I will be heading home on the 15th. My husband and I were all set to go to Hawaii to be on Tara's Tiger Cruise on the 21st. But do to a bunch of sailors getting ill after they ported in Thailand 2 weeks ago and fearing that it was swine flu, the Cruise has just been cancelled. So needless to say we are really bummed.
Now that the shock has worn off and I found out that i didn't loose all my $ on airfare I am working on plan B, which is........nothing is stopping us from driving down to San Diego and giving her the biggest hug we can possible give her at homecoming. This 6th month deployment has had it's share of excitement. I will be glad when it is over.
She did earn her ESWS pin while out. Very proud of her for that.
Well, now that things should be settleing down I will be around here more.
