My son is in Sigonella.  He wants me to ship him his scuba diving fins, snorkel, masks, dive knife, and a couple of books.  I would also like to stick some Easter goodies in there.  Does anyone know the rules and how to ship?  Is it super expensive for a box big enough for the fins?

jboysmom: My son has been in Sigonella since January 3, 2013.  He is single, so he lives in the barracks.  He has a roommate, but he rarely sees him.  He was fortunate to have a great friend who was already stationed there a few months before he got there.  He also ended up going over there with another guy in his class, so it was easier for me knowing he already had a couple friends in place.

He still doesn't have internet in his room because he doesn't want to spend the $90-100 to get it, but I think he's going to do it before too long.  It's just too inconvenient to go down to the lobby with his laptop and phone to call us with magic jack or to factime us with his iphone.  The connection hasn't been that great.  His roommate has wifi but doesn't want to share. Nice. I can't even imagine how hard it would be  if he had a wife and child to take away from us too!  Talk about ripping out your heart... I hope you can find comfort here.

My son, his wife and our only granddaughter will be arriving in Sigonella this coming week.  While I am excited for them to begin a new journey in Italy, I am also very sad to see them go so far away from us here at home.  I know I am going to REALLY depend on this Navy mom's group to help me get through these next 3 years.  I have been reading through all the previous comments and appreciate so much all that has been shared.  I have been so full of questions for my son these past few weeks while he has been here with us, but he just keeps saying "I don't know that answer yet and will have to wait until we get to Sigonella to find out".  I hope you all here in this group won't mind to answer some of my questions, too.  And so begins a new journey for my son - in Italy!

Does anybody know if I buy a NEX gift card for my son if it will be something I can reload?  I want to get him one to use while he's in Italy for the next 3 years, but I don't know if I will be able to reload it from here?

Or do any of you have a suggestion for a card I can get him that I can reload from here while he's in Italy?

Hi jboysmom,

I remember last July when he received his orders, time goes fast.

Our Katie has an international text number, I believe it's from AT-T and she also buys calling minutes from Skype.

Do not text until he gets that international number as you will be charged for every text and that adds up real quick. That can be done before he leaves the states.

And Skype, set a time each week when you all can get together.

Go back over the past posts and review, there is a lot of good information here.

It is hard for them being away too but remember they will find a new 'family' there they can depend on so they will not be alone. Our Sailors support each other very well.

Safe travels to your son and family.

My son will be reporting to Sigonella NAS 2 in mid March.  His last day on his ship will be this Monday, then he has a month of a class/training in Florida before making the move to Sigonella.  He'll be in Italy for 3 years.

While I'm excited for him to be traveling, I'm also VERY anxious about him being gone for 3 years.  Even harder will be that his wife and daughter (my only granddaughter) will be moving there with him.  My granddaughter is only 19 months old and it's going to be so hard to have them so far away for 3 years.  Don't know if my heart can take it!

Their vehicle was shipped yesterday and their house will be packed up and shipped Feb. 1st.  They will fly on March 12th to Italy.  At least we'll get to visit with them for the month of Feb. before they leave.

I know I'll be depending on those of you on this site for advice, help, and support.  Right now, we're just wondering how we'll be able to communicate with them because I've heard that cell phones are too expensive.  What is MagicJack?

Thanks for any help/advice you can give me - blessings.

My son and I communicate via magicjack...you still have to pay for the internet connection but then at least you're not paying the phone and the calls on top of the flat rate.

Ok my son is saying his roommate is paying $90 a month for Internet! That seems so high. Does anyone know if this is reasonable? Or is there a cheaper place to get it? Is there maybe a cable/Internet package or something?

Thanks. The time difference is difficult.  He has a good friend who is already there, and he is supposed to go to his room to facetime us today.  I'm pretty sure he is on NAS 2. I guess he will start indoc tomorrow.  So thankful for facebook right now!

He should be set up fairly soon.  It will be much better than bc once he is all settled and everyone adjusts to the time difference.
