Hi AJ....glad you had a great trip and got to see Katie. Bummer you didn't get to see MY boy and give him a hug, but I guess that's the way things go :)
To all the newbies, read the past posts. There is a lot of good information and if there is something specific you can't find an answer to please post and I'm sure you will get an answer. All of our situations are different so one answer may not be what's right for you. Also, the most important thing in a smooth transfer is to make sure your Sailor stays in contact with his mentor.
Hello to iboysmom and other moms/wives -
For those of you whose sailors have families I can understand your concerns & worries about them going so far away when they've always been close enough to visit & contact regularly. My son is single so it's only him we have to think of in this situation, but he's had to do a lot of "growing up" in the last year - exactly 1 year ago today he graduated from boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. From Great Lakes he went to San Antonio for A school and I was so worried about whether he'd be able to get through it (he and school in general had never mixed well before) but he did quite respectably, though he wasn't at the top of his class. After A school he stayed in San Antonio for 6 months training as a Pharmacy Tech - when he told us he had chosen & been assigned to go to Sicily we were really excited & happy for him (he had talked about wanting to go overseas). At Sigonella he's going to be working (I believe) at the hospital attached to the naval base there. His dad & I are very much among the "newbies" for this type of situation but if we learn about anything that might be useful for others about travel, etc. I'll pass it along - hope to hear more from you as well.
Hello Moms,
We just returned from 2 weeks in Italy. We flew into Rome, took the train to Florence for 2 nights, the train to Venice for 5 nights where Katie flew up to meet us and then flew down to Catania for 7 nights in Taormina . An amazing trip. Katie has not been to Venice so we were able to explore together and she was able to join us for all but 2 days in Sicily.
Katie lives on NAS I and she was able to show us around. Flying in, she pointed out NAS II where she works, however we did not enter that base. Also, I didn't see any other Sailors except for those on the gate watch and those that were in the NEX. I can say though, even with all the activity in the area right now, all the Sailors and Marines are being well taken care of and they are safe.
She will be there for another year yet so hopefully we are able to make another trip to visit.
Hi Chrisb4james and other moms/wives -
The time is quickly approaching when my son will be moving his wife and my only granddaughter to Sicily for his 3 year shore duty. He just re-enlisted on Friday for 3 more years in the Navy. He is to report to Sigonella by March 7th.
I hope more of you moms/wives that have someone at Sigonella will share with us "newbies". We've been so blessed (and spoiled) to have our son just an 11 hour drive away from us for the past 3 years. I am worried how we will handle them, especially our only granddaughter (age 15 months) being so far away from us?
I'm like you, chrisb4james - I have started a vacation club account and we are saving all we can so we can get to take a trip to visit them while they are in Italy. Any travel tips or advice would be GREATLY appreciated from those of you that have visited Siciliy.
Hi all -
My son left for his new assignment in Sigonella on Sept. 11 - kind of a spooky day to be traveling but he made it there safe & sound and so far seems to really be liking where he is. His Dad & I would like to go over to visit him eventually (we'll really have to "save up our pennies") - he's a Corpsman working as a pharmacy tech and said he'd be stationed there 2 years. Any advice we could pass along to him or about traveling over there?
Diane, send me his last name. If they don't hang out together, she would only know him by his last name.
He's in emergency dispatch
Hi Diane, Katie is IT and has had a few jobs, right now she's on a watch floor, She is also very active on base, I wouldn't be surprised if she knew most of the personnel in Sig and I will ask if she knows anyone named Brent. What does he do?
AJ - what does your daughter do? I don't know if my son would know her
