My son will be stationed in Sicily starting the end of February. Anyone have any good advice for things he should bring with him? He will be living in the bachelor quarters.
Hello Coties mom,
My daughter is staff, this is the word from her:
E4 and above with 4 years in service with a letter of recommendation from CO when barracks at 95% capacity. E5 and above on economy or as stated in members orders.
I'm sure he will enjoy the island. Have him prepare for rain in Novemberand when you send boxes make sure you put contents in a plastic bag before you put in the box and tape it well.
Hi Diane,
Sicily is one of the best locations. Hopefully your son's sponsor will be on hand the first week to orient him to the base, that seems to be the most critical time when arriving anywhere new.
ITT sponsors trips/tours and dinners around town, a good way to meet shipmates.
A car may be necessary depending on what base he is living on and where he works. I believe NAS1 and NAS 2 are about 7 miles apart and the locals run the busses, when they are running, definately not dependable.
There is a NEX with everything he would need, using dollars not euros.
The ATM's charge $2+ to use.
We skype and e-mail a lot, that is our life-line. Do not send links in an e-mail, they are not allowed and if on facebook, be careful what you write, no information or location.
A Sicilian cell phone will be required by command. Also, we phone through skype, that works well, however communication lately has been spuratic because of the Marines being there.
Oh my goodness, there is a lot, if I could only remember it all. :D.
If there is anything specific you have a question on, please ask.
All the best to your sailor!
AJ
Welcome aboard Beth, this is a quiet group unless someone posts a question, we are basic information mostly.
My daughter left for Sicily in September and the group was very helpful.
