My son will be stationed in Sicily starting the end of February.  Anyone have any good advice for things he should bring with him?  He will be living in the bachelor quarters.

Hello Coties mom,

My daughter is staff, this is the word from her:

E4 and above with 4 years in service with a letter of recommendation from CO when barracks at 95% capacity. E5 and above on economy or as stated in members orders.

I'm sure he will enjoy the island. Have him prepare for rain in Novemberand when you send boxes make sure you put contents in a plastic bag before you put in the box and tape it well.

Kkasi:My son has been calling a lot from there.  He has been there about one week as well.  He is still going through Indoc.  He said he got Magic Jet for phone service.  It has some type of thing that connects to the internet & the per minute call is very inexpensive.  We are going to look into it so we can call him.  I guess you get your own phone number, but I will let you know after we check into it.

I'm sure he will get out, once his wife gets there in about another month.  We have cousins in Greece & he wants to get a chance to go see them as well.  I know he won't just want to stay on base.

The Robin:  I'm not sure which location yet.  He is an ABE2.  I have no idea what he is going to be doing.  I don't think he knows yet either.

AJ:  Actually, due to an emergency for her, my son's sponsor will be flying with him from stateside to Sicily.  I understand about what info can & can't be sent, as my son has been in the Navy for over 5 years.  This is a change of command for him & we are very excited about it.  We will let him know about the phone, as this is what we have been telling him, although he thinks just adding international to his own phone is enough - NOT!!!    We're not sure whether he will be on NAS 1 or NAS 2 at this time.  I appreciate the info & will pass it along to him.

Hi Diane,

Sicily is one of the best locations. Hopefully your son's sponsor will be on hand the first week to orient him to the base, that seems to be the most critical time when  arriving anywhere new.

ITT sponsors trips/tours and dinners around town, a good way to meet shipmates.

A car may be necessary depending on what base he is living on and where he works. I believe NAS1 and NAS 2 are about 7 miles apart and the locals run the busses, when they are running, definately not dependable.

There is a NEX with everything he would need, using dollars not euros.

The ATM's charge $2+ to use.

We skype and e-mail a lot, that is our life-line. Do not send links in an e-mail, they are not allowed and if on facebook, be careful what you write, no information or location.

A Sicilian cell phone will be required by command. Also, we phone through skype, that works well, however communication lately has been spuratic because of the Marines being there.

Oh my goodness, there is a lot, if I could only remember it all. :D.

If there is anything specific you have a question on, please ask.

All the best to your sailor!

AJ

Hi!  My son is heading to this new location.  He will be there this week.  What should he expect as far as, well, everything.   I would appreciate any info

Sheila, how was the weather in August? Katie says it is uncomfortably hot and for us to come later.

Welcome aboard Beth, this is a quiet group unless someone posts a question, we are basic information mostly.

My daughter left for Sicily in September and the group was very helpful.
