Wow Kalynn those are some great suggestions, i'm going to safe them for our trip down. It's so nice when there are people that know the area it so helps for those of us who have tons of questions. I know your post is for ZZs but it sure is helping me too... Thanks:)
ZZsMom - Sorry I haven't been on anymore this week to give you idea of activities for this weekend, it's been one hectic week! I'm so glad you all have enjoyed my local favorite food restraunts! Here's some destinations you might wanna hit up while your here:
Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens - www.cummer.org - very beautiful right on the river, perfect spot for some pictures!! =) Also you'll drive through a small towny area called 5 points or riverside, lots of cute little shops.
Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens - www.jacksonvillezoo.org - not been there but heard great things, it's on my to do list before we PCS.
Museum of Science and History - www.themost.org - also not been but on my to do list. Last I heard the bodies exhibit was there!! =) Mosh is right downtown which is a nice area to visit, it's right across the river from the landing which is very nice! They have a mall type set up inside, some mall type shops, some crafter stands, a food court and some other restraunts there. At night the main street bridge lights up blue, that's Jacksonville's most notable bridge instead of seperating like a normal draw bridge the whole center rises up!
Also downtown this weekend at the Jacksonville Times Union Center there will be 4 performances of the broadway show wicked and 1 performance of the Jacksonville Orchestra. My husband and I were able to go to the orchestra once and we absolutely loved it. Have your daughter check with the ITT office tomorrow to see if they have any discounted tickets for any of the performances. Check out the times and such at www.jaxevents.com
It's supposed to be rather cold this weekend but if your craving a walk on the week, our favorite is Huguenot Beach - you can drive on it and it's a best kept local secret beach so pretty quiet....My mother in law likes to go there to collect sheels! =)
Also there is the St Augustine touristy stuff, your daughter can get you some great deals there! the trolly is usually buy one get one for military, and most of the attractions are discounted or free, and your trolly pass is good for 3 days, and my favorite part about going to St Augustine is the outlet mall right off of 95!! =)
Also right here on base, take a walk through the outdoor plane museum, there's a small nature walk on Mustin road near the lodge across from the golf clubhouse, there's some nice river side docks and pavilions to enjoy lunch at, there's also a great view point up near the marina to look out at the river and bridge - even has one of those site seeing binoculars. There's a nice long nature trail that wraps the back side of base housing featuring the more naturey side of NAS JAX - trail head on Childs Street and the other trail head is on Mustin Road. We have bowling, bingo, and the budweiser brewhouse restraunt also right here on base.
This should give yall some good ideas to make a game plan for the weekend! I just found out my hubby's working 7am-7pm tomorrow so my day just freed up if yall want a tour guide for here on base, just let me know!! =) Hope yall have fun this weekend!!!!
zzsmom glad you are having a good time.
zzsmom enjoy the rest of your trip here. If you need anything while your here let me know. We live 14 miles from base.
Dunesmom winter has actually been pretty good. We have only had to turn the heat on for 3 days so far. All the others we have had windows open and most of the time at night also. And it will be nice and warm come April. So plenty of time and sun walking on the beach.
i hear it's a long weekend for many this weekend, Monday off too. I'll let my Son know to look for a gal that has a Mom visiting this weekend. Maybe they can figure out who each other is.
I hope it's warmer in April down there i'm looking forward to some walking on the beach and kyaking when we get there.
We are getting a big ol snow storm tonight... first one of the season
Thanks Marybeth- It is actually for gabbyhat as her daughter is getting married.
Dunesmom I think zzsmom is going to be here this weekend with her car. Maybe you could have your son meet up with them and break the ice.
ZZsmom make sure you pack some warm clothes as it is suppose to be cold this weekend. It was 75 today but the temp is suppose to drop friday night to 32 and a high of only 57 on sat and sunday.
