Wow! Our 8 inches Friday don't compare to what you West Coaster have had. You are welcome to borrow my Chicago mantra for getting through it - Every day is one day closer to Spring! It really helped last year with the record snow and blizzards.
Lou2949: Many congrats to you and your soon to be NFO! It is a real accomplishment; did you know that Norfolk only winged 42 in all of 2010? The only problem is trying to explain to non-Navy what it is that the Hawkeyes do. I usually end up just saying that my guy is in Naval Aviation and leave it at that.
You probably won't find out where he is going until right before winging. My Conor opted for Japan; three others in his class opted to stay based in Norfolk and one picked Point Mugu (love the name) in CA. Mugu was Conor's second choice. Darn, I really liked the idea of him being right between Malibu and santa Barbara! He's liking Japan a lot, though.
Be prepared that even though they get their assignment, orders may take a while. "We" winged in August, but he didn't go to Japan until right after Thanksgiving. His furniture, etc. is still in transit!
We found the Navy Lodge was very convenient for the winging. Your son will have to make the reservations, but it is the nearest hotel to the base and very reasonable.
By the way, there is a separate group for NFO moms. It is really helpful, even though a small group. I have been especially lucky because one mom has 2 NFOs in Japan. Check it out.
Kathy, I can understand why you were nervous . . . over Mach 1! I am officially starting to worry. My son just started jet training, and I can tell this will be a bumpy ride. Any words of wisdom are always appreciated.
Nancy - Is your DS in Lemoore or Oceana? Mine is in Lemoore. Although right now he is training in Key West. Yesterday he let us know he flew Mach 1.05 (supersonic qual completed)! YIKES!! Of course, he loved it! His only downside is that scheduling is not always the best, but there are so many variables that cause those problems, and that happens throughout the training. So he knows that is just part it. I felt the same way when he told me he went solo right away. He calmed me by assuring me the jet can practically "fly itself" and so that is what I am thinking. If there are other problems, he might not be sharing with me... He is married now, so she may hear all about it. I used to hear every detail, but I think she has replaced me in that role... that may be a good thing for me. :) I worry less.....
Sandy - I am in Illinois, too... far northwest Chicago suburbs. We had snow, and very cold. But thankfully, not the ice!
Nancy - I hope you get power back soon. We had week long outages last summer, but at least we did not need it for heat, and the days were longer.
Leslie - my DS is renting a very nice house in CA, but just found the owner is putting it on the market. So after only 6 months, they are moving again! Next time, they will make sure to ask if the owner is thinking about selling.... Another life lesson. Glad "your" situation was resolved...
Have a good weekend everyone!
Oh Nancy!! How awful for you guys!
I wonder how diferent the training is in Oceana compared to Lemoore. Our DS is loving his Super Hornet training experience. My heart stopped when I was informed that they had one flight with a back seat instructor, then it was the single seat jets. He very calmly informed me that they already know how to fly jets, therefore instructor only in first flight. They are hoping for CQ's in April.
Always enjoy reading the updates, especially the new ones. Seems like so long ago when he was in P-cola and CC!!
Sheila....Glad you checked in. I always miss you when you don't post:)
Were's Sheila been lately?
Just booked a flight to Lemoore during my spring break!! Never thought I would be excited about going to Lemoore, but I am - looking forward to seeing my DS and new DIL - and having some quiet time to just relax with them (I hope). Our last visits were long weekends for his winging and later wedding, so this should be a little quieter. Just wanted to make sure I got to see him before deployment in case I am still in school.
Kathy - I have often thought about those flight instructors... I did not enjoy driver's ed years, and can't imagine being in the air! Glad you get to visit with your DD.
Congrats on the winging date, and all the great things these young men and women are accomplishing. They really are amazing!!
Have a good week, everyone!
Navy wife and mom....Love your saying! Hope you don't mind me using it?
I am sure we are all touched in some way by this heartbreaking story. My DS knew one of the pilots, and his buddies knew the other. We pray each day for their safety, and then how can we try to make some kind of sense of this? I cannot, and probably never will. There are no words to comfort the families of all those young people, but I will pray....
As for the Stennis, James, we are watching that closely, too. My neighbor is on board - a wonderful young lady who is an enlisted sailor. She and my DS were in the same class, so I pray for her, and her shipmates, to safely get back home soon!
I've been away from N4M for a while, but I will continue to check in periodically. James, how is your DS doing in Lemoore? Things seemed slow for my son for a while, but now I think he is moving along again. I have mixed feelings - he finishes this, then SERE (they let him wait since he winged right before his wedding), and then deployment. I am trying to prepare....
Hoping that this new year brings more peace on earth than conflict, and that each of our children will be safe!! Happy New Year, Navy Moms and Dads!
