Chris and Leslie....Have you every thought of sending them their favorite card or board game they had as a child?  How about a party in a box for Christmas with fun little toys in it.  What about a pair of new Christmas pj's.

Just because they are land base, doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy a good dose of childhood memories.

KUNavy.  What ship is your DS on?   Mine just deployed yesterday also.  I sent you a friend request.  My DS is on the Abraham Lincoln.

Ideas for shipboard time packages should include some warm weather gear. These guys forget that it is a lot colder at sea than on land! Socks, sweatshirts, etc. are always appreciated. My son thought Japan would be like Norfolk and is thrilled with extra socks, gloves, etc. Magazines are also a big hit for those who aren't stateside; they don't care how old they are and they really get passed around. Another idea for munchies that travel well are things like seasoned nuts and trail mix. You don't have to worry as much about perishability.

Thanks for the below, DJ.  I didn't hear about your DS being injured in SF, but you are right...God has a plan!  SERE is NO fun but the have to make it real.  'Nuf said!  How else are our DC supposed to survive if the unthinkable happens?  On a lighter note, hopefully, by the time you are reading this DS is on the way home from deployment and should arrive soon!!!!!  Her daddy is going up to meet the NALO flight and surprise her (I have a concert to play in tomorrow night/actually two of them so I couldn't go).  Hugs will be abundant at Christmas this year <3

Someone told me that they packed cookies and put them in a seal a meal pouch,  She then froze them and sent them frozen.  I guess it helped to keep them a bit more fresh.  I'm not a baker so I haven't done it.

CQ's and SERE.  The 2 hardest things for Moms with SNAs in training.  It does get easier, just to let you know.

Leslie, I just accepted.    This is DS's 2nd deployment too so they might know each other.   Do you know what department he's in?

Comment by Julie on December 7, 2011 at 5:38pm

thanks Leslie-I can't wait to see what the "professional" ones look like.

In addition to the yellow ribbon I kept up a garland with white lights after Christmas through-out the deployment and it will not come down again this Christmas. DS loves Christmas and it somehow keeps him close.

I have been thinking about you- it does get easier but never easy

Leslie - love the story about the ribbon - it is so freeking hard to say "my son is on deployment...." without a catch in the throat.  What was harder for me was when people told me "to thank him for his service" - that's when I used to lose it!  There are so many ways to communicate now with the internet - I think my son used something called "google talk" in addition to skype - which worked really well while he was on 3 continents - it was like he was in the next room!

The Abe Lincoln is leaving Everett this morning for the last time.  My DS will be driving down to San Diego to walk on as he is the head LSO.  To be honest, I don't think that he has ever flown first time.  That's ok by me.  He is supposed to leave sometime around March and be flown home from somewhere that they do a port call but he won't know until almost around that time.  We'll miss him obviously.  Leslie, I totally understand and I think it is a great idea, but awfully hard to do.  I have a service flag in the window for when DS is on deployment.  It will get easier.
