Kathy B, good news all around.  One of the ladies that I work with had congenital heart failure right after the birth of her twin daughters.  4 1/2 years later all 3 are doing great. It was hard for her being away from the little ones so I am glad that your sister is with hers.  That will heal a broken heart more than anything.

My DS took off last night for Tailhook in Reno.  He needs the downtime.  He took a day of leave yesterday and worked for 9 hours.  The only saving grace was when someone came in to ask him to do something, he said that he could get to it on Monday but he was on leave, so technically he isn't there.  I've done that... and that ain't leave.

I do thing the psychological aspects of SERE were the hardests.  My DS did tell me one thing about the cold and wet.  He was so cold and wet at one point, that he couldn't stop shaking.  When they critiqued him at the end, they thought that his "acting" was very good.  He just went along with the acting bit.

Nancy, DS got into Whidbey Island as a treat for a good detachment in Fallon.  We didn't know until later so we didn't get to tell you. He was only there for 1 1/2 days at the most I think.

My son did the OCS route.  He got bad information going into school saying that an old injury of his wouldn't allow him into ROTC.  He was very disheartened as he didn't thing that he could get into the Navy at all and several recruiters told him the same thing.  I know that the ROTC training at CU was good and several of the group were in my son's senior projects group in Aerospace Engineering, and were just behind him in Pensacola for API.  They caught up pretty quickly as some of them already had pilots licenses and skipped IFS.  Nothing wrong with ROTC.  However, with regards to uniforms, DS said that you could tell who went to OCS, ROTC and the academy.  The OCS had the neatist uniforms being trained by Marines, the ROTC were next and the Academy was last having worn uniforms for 4 years, they just didn't care anymore.  Don't shoot the messenger.... just what I was told.

My son attended SUNY Maritime College- it has a corps of cadets, they wore uniforms, did PT and mustered everyday. the school also has a training ship that the students go out on in summer for a Summer Sea Term. that aspect is primarily for the Merchant Mariner, but all students participate . The school also has an active ROTC which was paired with Fordam University, and my son drilled with them every week as well as with school. Students sit for a six hour Coast Guard License exam  just prior to graduation which allows them to ship out with a merchant fleet. The ROTC students take that exam as well as being commissioned upon graduation right into the Navy. All in all not bad for a "state school" the education and practical experience was awesome!

Denise- haha

"Here Everything's Better" I remember looking at the sign when I was running the track at Texas A and M ( I think that was the college)  when  I was visiting Andrew in Kingsville. - He lived right down the street.

Actually after having been in the HEB I think it should be "Here Everything's Bigger" the pumpkins were the size of Cinderella's carriage.

DD off to Pensecola for a month of training - then Fallon Nevada - then married- then work ups and out for his second deployment with the Enterprise in March. Funding for the big "E" stops in Oct. and the decommissioned and replaced by the Gerald R. Ford. Oh yeah training for LSO in there too!! First bridal shower was in Buffalo last weekend and I'm doing one at our home next week. Let the games begin.

Sheila, my DS is also a mustang.  Not married so vented a bit to parents, but does NOT put up with much garbage :)  Decided that it would just make DS work that much harder.......1st in the class at winging !  Now on deployment.  Again.  These kids of ours have amazing energy and motivation and drive to achieve greatness!
