When our aviators get to their squadrons after their training, they are assigned jobs within the squadron. The flying turns into just a small part of the whole. The pilots basically are the managers of the squadron and the Skipper and XO are the President and VP. When he first got to the squadron, he was assigned 2 jobs. One was legal officer and the other was being a NATOPS officer. The legal stuff got to be a pretty big deal as it seemed that a bunch of the enlisted started getting into trouble for various things and he ended up having to prepare cases for Captain's Mast and going to schools for that. The other was a bunch of safety. This was in addition to the flying. He has had various jobs over the last couple of years. So go away and others just hang around. He is trying to get ready for the next assignment which will happen while he's on the next cruise so he has to get everything lined up before they leave. I'm hoping it will work out. Where he wants to go is pretty competitive and I know that he wants to make a good impression.
Everyone whose loved ones are still in the training stages or SNA stage..... tell them to enjoy the freedom while they can. I remember when my DS was waiting to class up for API that I called him and he was on the beach in Pensacola reading a book. I was at work. He told me that there are just so many times that you can go to the beach and read and that he was ready to get going. I bet that he would like to take those words back now.
Nancy, I'm so glad that your son will be able to go to your Dad's services. Mike couldn't go to his granpa's services while he was in college as they were in the middile of mid-terms and he just couldn't. It was really hard on him. A military service is so moving. DH's dad was retired AF and his service was amazing. We met with the Chaplain for about 2 hours the day before and when he did the service, it was like he had known my FIL forever.
My DS leaves for an exercise in AK in the next couple of days. It is supposed to take most of the month of June. He has things that need to be done in the mainland but I guess they are just going to have to wait. I just wish that he sounded like he was having fun. They have him working 15 hour days 6 days a week. He is doing 3 peoples jobs right now and I really worry about his health. Come July, he will be the head JO in his squadron which means that he will be taking on another job. They won't have his replacement until September so that means that he will then be doing 4 jobs and they are getting ready for workups again for deployment again later in the year. I thought at 29 years of age, that I wouldn't have to worry about him so much. LOL at myself, huh?
My son put his flight suit in the dryer, just didn't use a dryer sheet and it was fine.
Here in New Smyrna Beach with Leslie & Flyboymom and we are having a blast, wish you all were here with us!
Sheila..Swords are presented. Usually at the party or reception after the commisioning. It should be presented by you and his father.
