I hate that feeling when they call you after they have emergency landings. Makes my heart drop, and I loose my breath. He's had two, one were the landing gear won't come down and the other lost the power.

I asked him after the second one why he called and not his wife first. He said I would just listen and he could vent without worry.

That's what we mom's do, listen.

Ok, I guess that I will stop joking. It was Mike that made the emergency landing in San Diego. I don't have all the facts, but he said that he it was a little more serious than a minor emergency. It is probably good that he is back on the ship. The plane is still at North Island. Apparently his adrenaline was going pretty good for a while and had no radio reception, but could transmit. Anyway, he's fine but isn't flying again until they complete an investigation.

My sil sent to me,this is not really Navy related but it cute:

A pastor had been on a long flight
between church conferences.
The first warning of the approaching problems came when the sign on
the airplane flashed on: Fasten
Your Seat Belts.
Then, after a while, a calm voice said,
"We shall not be serving the beverages
at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please be sure your seat
belt is fastened."

As the pastor looked around the aircraft,
it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive.
Later, the voice on the intercom said,
"We are so sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us."

And then the storm broke . . ...

The ominous cracks of thunder could
be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightning lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on
a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents
of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash.

The pastor confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him.
He said, "As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm."

"Then, I suddenly saw a little girl. Apparently the storm meant nothing
to her. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat; she was reading a book and everything within
her small world was calm and orderly."

"Sometimes she closed her eyes, then
she would read again; then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world."
When the plane was being buffeted by
the terrible storm when it lurched this
way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid."
The minister could hardly believe his eyes.

It was not surprising therefore, that
when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers
were hurrying to disembark, our pastor lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time.
Having commented about the storm and the behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid.

The child replied, "Cause my Daddy's the pilot, and he's taking me home."

When Mike was in Primary, he was always having things going wrong with planes. It was always with his on-wing. It got to be a really big joke around the squadron. I tell you this because, the FB page for his squadron posted that one of their planes had a minor emergency last night and had to divert to San Diego. His dad and I are betting it was Mike. lol. He had one of those when I visited him in Lemoore in Nov. Ended up staying in Fallon one night while I was there. What a way to avoid having to spend an evening with your mom. I will get through deployment by making things humorous!!!! Otherwise, I might cry.

My son deployed on an aircraft carrier in 2003 at the start of the war...one week after they arrived in the Med. my father passed away so we had to email my son and tell him his beloved grandfather was gone.....he didn't come home but the Navy let him call as often as he could...we could hear the jets taking off and landing on the flight deck while we talked to him....it was unbelievable knowing where the pilots were going and what they were doing at that time. We had such heavy hearts then for our own loss but for every single person in the military. My son deployed again in 2005-2006 for 7 months. It's a mixture of tremendous pride, anxiety and a bit of fear for the unknown. Thank goodness the communication is as great as it is now....don't know how the families back home handled it during WWI and WWII.....my son is in API now and loving every minute of it.....the journey has begun!!!!

Well, I just found out that as soon as the current exercise is completed, which should be in about 1 1/2 weeks, the Lincoln will be heading West for deployment. I knew this day would come, but somehow, I am not really ready for it.

Hi Nancy! We, unfortunately, do not have a Target but we have heard rumors for quite some time that we would be getting one. Only one can hope I guess! :) We do have a mall that has the basic clothing stores like American Eagle and The Buckle. Two of the best resturants in Meridian are Cresent City Grill and Saki Sushi which also serves as a local hangout for flight students. San Marcos mexican resturant also honors local vouchers from students so they tend to eat there alot as well. Definately get with flyboymom about Meridian as she may have a visitors perspective. Also, feel free to ask me any questions about the area!! Is your son living on base or out in the surrounding areas?

I am currently in Anchorage, Alaska. Please remember the families of the aviators who died in the C-17 crash yesterday at Elmendorf AFB.

Nancy, This is so sad. I have looked here to see if there is anything set up here, but the only thing that I could find was a donations through a Credit Union in Encino CA. I'll keep looking.
