Chris, when my kid got out to Lemoore, he initially lived in Hanford which is about 10 miles or so West of Lemoore. He shared a house w/ 2 others. I can't honestly say that I've seen many apartments buildings when I was there, but I'm sure there are some. His roommates made it out there a couple of days before him and had contacted a realtor to see about a rental. Hope that helps.

whitney...welcome aboard! My son is renting a nice 3 bedroom house on Perdido Key. I believe there are a bunch of NFO's and pilots living in that area. Only 10 minutes from the back gate on base. And in the flight path of the Blue Angels!

My son rented a great house in Milton - I believe he found it on craigslist.

Congrations on your new NFO...it is so nice to read about an NFO winging! Have only seen the ones for pilots. We wish her the very best in her career.

I posted this at NFO Moms, but thought I would share it here also:

Our daughter winged as an NFO last Friday in Jacksonville. The ceremony was a very nice balance between the formal and informal. The event started with a light reception in the squadron commander's conference room and office. The ceremony followed. It was a mix of short speeches and presentations in the squadron auditorium. Her wings were presented to her by Rear Admiral William Moran, commander of the entire Patrol and Reconaissance community. She chose to have her pinning by her mother and father. There was as much time as necessary for pictures during the actual pinning and then after the ceremony. A P3 Orion was available for tours after the ceremony.

As to gifts, we gave her gold wings that she liked. We also had a flag flown over the US Capitol in her honor and she received a nice commendation from a Congressman that we have known for years. Our connection expedited the process, so if you are not so fortunate to have such a friend and want to do that it will take 4-6 weeks. She thought that was very cool. Finally, we made a commemorative letterhead that we circulated to friends and family and collected many best wishes and memories that we then put in a scrapbook. She also really appreciated that.

The party that they threw that evening is best left to your imagination. It is sufficient to say that the label "drunken sailor" is a well-earned description!

Overall, our hearts were swollen with pride the entire day. It was a memory to cherish.

I just got another email saying that he had a landing about midnight last night. As he was being chained to the deck, he saw the fog roll in. Everyone being recovered after him did it in the fog. The LSO had the pilots turn on their taxi lights so they could see them and then talked them "into the wires". His words - "Pretty sporty, a little scary, but also very cool at the same time." I'd believe the scary portion - not too sure about sporty and cool.
