Deborah ... I'm with you there in the "tell me after..." however, their career is fraught with danger. When a plane went down with a student and instructor (and that happened about 3 or 4 time during his time in Pensacola and Meridian) my son took it upon himself to call me immediately-in case it was televised or announced on the radio - and let me know it was not him-that he was okay. They are very good at Meridian.

We finally got out of the training stage and are now onto the actual work. I know that it is hard to not worry about your son, but take it from a master worrier, it will get better. Just be patient and understanding. What he is doing is not going to be easy and he will get moody. He'll be grumpy a bunch of the time and on top of the world the next. These guys and girls are the best of the best and they won't let them go up in a plane unless they are sure that they can do it. Just hang in there and try not to think about what is going on day to day. I know it was better that way. He'll call you on weekends and you can find out what he's done when it's already done. Much better that way!!!

I believe you mean SERE training. All pilots go through SERE, its survival training in several different weather elimates (snow, heat, water and differ terrains etc).

Hi everyone!!!
We have wonderful news!! Andrew carrier qualified yesterday!!!! He said it was such an amazing experience. He had to do I think 14 traps and touch and goes off the Ronald Reagan. So many prayers were answered that everything went well and all of these brave young men and women were safe after 2 days of intense flying. Andrew said the catapult off the carrier was intense-- but then he saw the carrier from above and had to put all that he had learned in Kingsville to the test. What an amazing accomplishment to land a jet on a surface the size of a football field. My husband and I could not be more proud of all the hard work Andrew has done over the past few years. The Navy has done a fine job training these young people for the jobs they will have to do in service to our country. Have a wonderful week everyone.

I think that my husband and I are closer also. Sure do miss that tax deduction though.

Kris, My son said the base and people were good, but the area is very remote-He lives in Ridgecrest, not far from base, and there is not much to do. The nearest big mall is in Palmdale about 1 to 1 1/2 hrs away. The guys usually plan to drive to do anything. It is harder for families where the wife or girlfriend works, because there are not many jobs. My daughter-in-law is in Northern Calif working, because there is nothing for her in China Lake. They drive to see each other on weekends.

All....I am in need of some assistance. It may seem a little thing, but it means a great deal to my 4 year old granddaughter. My son will be transfering from the east coast to the west coast this summer. My granddaughter has two little fish that she has had for a couple of years. She is already anixous about the move and wants to make sure her fish go with her.

Has anyone out there had experience moving and taking along fish? Any recommendations or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Debi, my son had a friend in Primary in Corpus who was told that he was too tall for jets. That was down in Pensacola a couple of years ago. He asked to be remeasured and they did and he is now flying EA6-Prowler. He had another guy in his OCS class that was almost too tall. He used to run with a weighted backpack to try and compress his spine (I thought that was a really bad idea). Fortunately, Mike is just average and perfect for flying. Maybe your daughter could hang by her feet for awhile and stretch her spine!

It would be nice if we found out that they had gone to SERE after they were all done. I'm fine if I don't know at any specific time exactly what he is doing. Unfortunately, I knew when carrier quals were both time and SERE. When Mike completed SERE, he called to tell us he was fine. He had taken a shower and they were all going to go get something to eat. They raided the vending machines instead and never made it out to eat. They all just crashed!!!!!
