DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Hi fellow moms! I've got some questions that I hope someone can answer for me. My son is presently at bootcamp and with only about 3 weeks left before he will be sent to A School in Pensacola. He scored well on his ASVAB and was assigned the job as AV. He has dreamed of working with the jets and traveling on a carrier and was told that was exactly what he would end up doing. He's been so excited! This last week, he went to Classifications meetings and was told he is actually FTS (Full Time Service Reservist). We had no idea! We have never heard of full time reserve. We thought that the Reserves was part time, one week end a month, etc. It has been explained to us that it was a budgeting decision. Apparently the Regular Navy budget was low when they wanted to assign him his job so they classified him as FTS in the Reserves where there were funds to support him. OK, no problem with that, as far as we know. What has been confusing to us now and a little upsetting is that someone there is telling him that because he is FTS rather than regular active duty, he will most likely never serve on a carrier and will most likely stay stateside working a regular 9 - 5 job. We admit that we are rookies to everything military and just don't understand or really even know what questions to ask. I would like to write him back and be able to tell him that he has been misinformed as to what his navy future looks like. He is really proud to become a Sailor and is really trying hard to keep a positive attitude, but any information or words of encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks.

I also forgot our SR mom who will be at the 8/24 PIR is from Austin Tx and is currently in the Navy Reserves not sure if my
daughter and her will be able to make it to the meet and greet but they are staying at the Navy Lodge. Where will you be
staying since we can't list last names here are you on FB. Maybe she can help also answer some of your concerns.

right now . my daughter has had a few discouraging letters from beau now he doesn't even mention BC in his letters only the future.
My son went through the same type of lies and bs from his recruiters about "sign on as a Reserve, you'll be able to switch to full-time active duty after bootcamp with NO problem". During bootcamp is when he discovered that this is not possible. This was back in May 2011.
Just last weekend at his drill weekend he was told that the Navy is in the process of getting rid of 1/2 of the Seabee units, including Reserves, and to expect to be "administratively discharged sooner than later".
Has anyone else heard this? My son is broken hearted. To learn that he was lied to from the very beginning and now he could possibly be discharged is just wrong. He LOVES the Navy. He loves being a Seabee. He chose to enlist on his own, and wants to serve his country. If there isn't enough room or rates available, STOP recruiting!!! Just my opinion.
