We just PCSd from hawaii.  We were there for 3 years.  I had an awesome job there as a project coordinator.  My husband is stationed in San Diego on a PreCom ship.  i am in our home of record now in Illinojis (near St Louis).  I planned to stay here to fix our house and try to sell it.  Renters destroyed it while we were gone.  Its almost finished and i can hopefully move in soon.  Having no luck with a job here.  Registered with 4 job agencies.  Only been actively looking about a month but it is very frustrating.  My husband is having to pay rent to live on base in apts since the ship isnt ready yet.  All of this has put a huge financial strain on us.  I am giving it till September and if I don't find a job by then, i will have to just lock up the house and go live with my husband in San Diego and try my luck there.  I was thinking this was the best choice for now to be here sell the house and pay off bills and go visit monthly.  He ships off to MS in March to help finish the ship.  But no income is not working.  You would think that more companies would be sympathetic to military wives situation.  I am open to temp, contract or whatever.  Anyone in the STL area that knows of a military friendly company?  I have many years exp as an Executivve Asst. and Project Coordinator

my husband was at  school for 2 months. his A school lasted a month but took him a month to class up. I moved to be with him for a month. I didn't take all of our things just the necessities the rest was put in storage. it was amazing. people told me not to, but  wanted to be with my husband so I did anyway :) he was in Pcola and we got to spend so much time together it was great. like a vacation for a whole month :P every school and class is different so I can't say you will have all the time I did with your husband

First, each school has different rules. Your husband will have to check with his chain of command when he gets there to see what the rules are regarding him living off base. Phase 2 is not a Navy-wide rule...it varies from each command. Second, if the school is only 19 weeks you will probably have to find your own housing. They won't provide you with housing for such short-term....I know Lincoln Military Housing, which has a lot of the privatized housing contracts with Navy bases, requires a 6 month lease at least. So if your husband's orders are for less than that they can deny you. If you know where he is going for A school, I recommend finding that group on here...I'm sure there are other wives who can give you insight into the area and temporary housing. BUT as I said above, your husband may not even be able to live off base with you.

You can move with him. Depending on the length of the school you may have to pay to move yourself. If it's longer than a certain length they will pay to move you but if it's shorter you will have to pay to move yourself. They can't stop you from moving anywhere you'd like in the US.

If he is going to be in A school for 6 mos or longer you can move to be with him.  i am moving next week to be with mine.  He has to be phase II to apply for the housing.

@beachmom76 THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your input was amazingly helpful. I'm glad I posted on here, I have learned some critical info on the moving process. I really appreciate everything you suggested.

Mariana-Congratulations on orders to San Diego! We loved our years there. The decision to move is one you and hubby need to talk through.  There are a couple of things to consider:

The ten days of hotel stay is called TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense) and covers your lodging as well as a per diem for meals. We usually stay at a Navy Lodge on base while we search for housing. You will pay for it and be reimbursed, so be sure to keep receipts!

If you do find temporary housing, will it be in the same school district as the base housing? If not, your child may have to change schools anyway.

The military should move you into housing if you are on the waiting list; we have moved 18 times over the years, several of those from rentals to base housing and they were always paid for by the Navy. You can check with the housing service center to be sure.

Your husband is justifiably excited about having you come out right away, but you might want to point out to him that having a couple of months to get used to the ship could be a real benefit for him. Let him get started off on the right foot at his new command without the distractions of wanting to run home to his wife and child.

This is a decision only the two of you can make. Consider all of the factors to make the best choice for your family. Welcome to the adventure of Navy life!

I need help, I am completely new to everything. I've been a member of this website for a while but was only connected to the boot camp group. My husband has finally received his orders and they are for San Diego, we are on the waiting list for military housing through Lincoln military Housing and the wait is 3-5 months, I was thinking I would wait until housing became available to go out there but he went to the fleet and family support center at the base where he is currently doing a-school and was told (and even encouraged) that he can take his family with him when he reports to his first duty station and that he will be given 10 days of housing at their on base hotel so he has time to find temporary housing until THEIR housing becomes available. I guess that's an option. Just don't think it's a wise one... He is so eager to have us with him already and I don't want to discourage him or shut him down. The lady at fleet and family support said that it being summer it was a good time to move (he is PCSING late july) since we have a 5 yr old starting Kindergarten in august. I have called the ombudsman numbers we were given and have been unable to reach them. Can someone please advise me on this???

Hi ljoyce, took us about 2 months to get into pet-friendly housing in San Diego. They have a hot list of immediately available housing he can look into as well if you don't want to wait. There are tons of civilian options that are pet-friendly and will save you some money as well. Most (though not all) of the pet-friendly housing out here takes all the BAH. Check them out online, it's Lincoln Military Housing.

Does anyone know how to update my address for DEERS & my husband's LED? He went online and logged into his (mypay) account but couldn't figure out how to change my address? Does anyone know what office I should call or have a number? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.
