Hi Invisible  My son also left from Ft Hamilton (We live in Nassau County) on 8/16.  On the 15th we dropped him off at the recruiter who took him to Ft Hamilton to start paperwork and that night he stayed at a hotel.  The next morning we arrived at about 8:30am and he was sworn in with the first group at 10:30.  He got a bag lunch from the military and stayed with us till about 2:15pm.  Then he had to go to a travel briefing--from there they board the buses.  You can meet your son at the airport and stay with him before he leaves, but to be honest I didn't see any family members do that.

That sounds exhausting.  I'm feeling horrible for him already.

Invisible12 - My son left from Fort Hamilton, we got in tons in of traffic so leave really early...I thought we were going to miss the ceremony, I was getting so upset.  However we got there and he wasn't sworn in until about 45 mins later.  He was very busy doing paperwork, and the computers were down.  He was exhausted already!!  We went in to see the ceremony, we took some pictures and he said he was starving and wanted to go eat.  He didn't want us to stay any longer, think it was harder for him to say good bye if we stayed longer.  We  only spent about a half hour with him.  He texted me later, they left for the airport about 2:30 for a 6:30 flight....it was a really hard day!!  He called me from his cell at 9 pm to let me know he arrived...then he called from GL at 2:15 am with a short 8 second call...good luck to you tomorrow!!

Thank you so much for the heads-up.  I'll be sure to get in my hugs and kisses.  Good luck to your son in A-School.

The paper work is only for SRs, not parents. We did not even had time to hug  and kiss him. Just go outsite when they are leaving the office and stand near the vans. Than you will be able to hug him for a few seconds. My son said, when he exited the  building that they  cannot stop and hug the family, but nothing will stop mom! Just do it and nobody will stop you. My SN now graduated from bootcamp on 08/29 and now in A-school in Great Lakes. He is very happy there, so do not worry too much. Everything will be OK.

Is it all paperwork that our SR has to fill out or are there papers for the parents to fill out as well?  So, out of all those hours you only got to see him for the 15-20 min ceremony and then an add'l 30-40 with him?  That's horrible!
Comment by Mike's mom on September 12, 2011 at 10:45am
For us it took like 5-6 hours all together, but we were be able to see our son maybe for 30-40 mins. The ceremony by itself took 15-20 mins, but there is a lot of paper work.

So my SR leaves this Thursday....3 more days!  I can't believe it's almost here.  For those of you whose SR left from Ft. Hamilton, can you tell me how long the swearing in ceremony lasted and how long were you able to spend time with your SR before you had to leave?

Thank you Fit Supporter, I guess I knew this but my head is not listening to my heart right now. Thanks for putting me back on track.

Oh Fit Supporter please don't tell me that. I heard from my Sr via a 5 minute phone call on Aug. 28th about a possible stress hip fracture and nothing since. It's driving me crazy. Not too proud of the Navy right now.
