My son said there was a possibility that a family member could travel on the aircraft carrier from Hawaii to California (at the end of deployment). He didn't know if this opportunity was limited to…Continue

Oops - forgot a comment for June 4th.
My son was in NROTC and then did primary and intermediate at Pensacola. At that point, they gave him a choice and he opted for NFO. He is very happy with his choice and is currently stationed in Japan (also his first choice), though he is in the States for two months at Top Gun school in Nevada.
As others have said, EVERYTHING depends on the needs of the Navy when she graduates. NFOs are a much smaller group than pilots; when Conor winged two years ago the six of them were the last of only 47 for the year. Your DS's engineering may help; my DS majored in poli sci and economics! we wish her luck.
Sheila - Happy birthday! It's hard to believe how fast they grow up. My youngest just got his "white coat" in medical school on Friday. Now THAT is scary! Hard to believe that my baby boy is going to be treating real live people.
Kris P - So glad you were able to hear from your oldest. I have been praying for him and will continue to do so. I know you will relieved when he is back in Scotland and you can all be together for Christmas.
Conor is halfway through Top Gun. It is sure a lot easier to talk to him when he is in the States rather than Japan! The two hour time difference is a breeze compared to 16 hrs. There are two other NFOs and 12 pilots in their 2 month program, plus 4 others who are the "adversaries" in the exercises. Apparently those guys have already completed the course and come back later to give them "live", unpredictable opponents. I find it all fascinating.
The fires in Yosemite are actually creating some problems. Conor said today that the smoke is getting so bad that he can't even see the far end of the softball field outside his window. They flew yesterday to try to get in some exercises before the smoke blocks them. I can't believe that it is so bad when they are 100 miles away. First half the base facilities are closed due to sequestration, then this. I just pray they will be able to graduate; as it is he will have to catch a flight out of Reno at 8 AM the day after graduation to get back to Japan on schedule. So much for a day or two at home!
All depends on the needs of the Navy. My son has had a great career thus far as an NFO. He is now in his ninth year and still loving the Navy life.
My daughter really wants to be an NFO She has a year and a half left in college and NROTC she got a 4/5 on the test and her flight physical is complete! Her degree is engineering and her GPA is 3.0!! does she have a good shot???
Tinker got hit but don't know the full extent of the damage. Waiting for an update.
They returned home today. Damage is minor and insurance will cover all repair costs. They realize how lucky and blessed they are, as several in his squadron lost homes...not too mention the damage at Tinker from the last batch of storms. DS will return to base tomorrow and see what is happening there. Onward and upward!
Ann: Congratulations to your DS. That is a really exciting promotion for them. My DS winged as a Hawkeye NFO at Norfolk in August 2011. It was a wonderful day.
I doubt it has changed much, so here goes...
Winging was on a Friday, too. It started early (8?) with a briefing by his training officers and then we got to see the planes and go into one and the simulators. We had a family lunch at the O Club and then changed for the afternoon ceremony. My DD and I wore dresses, but we were in jeans for the morning.
The ceremony was short but moving; the whole squadron turned out. Next was a reception back at the O Club; cake, punch, beer, etc. By the way, they post the names on the marquee about a block down and it makes for a fun shot to catch his name on film. We then had a family dinner and dropped him off at the bar where the newly winged buy the rest of the squadron drinks.
If you are looking for something to do on Saturday, there is a nice naval museum in downtown Norfolk and you can drive or take the ferry over to Portsmouth, which has a historic downtown.
They also will find their posting a few days before; that was a little nerve-wracking as we waited to see if he'd get his first choice. Luckily (for him), he did, and is halfway through his tour in Japan. Amazing how fast the time goes.
Conor still loves the Haweyes and I hope your son will, too.
Son is stationed at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma. They live in Moore...their house is still standing with minor damage but the south end of their street was flattened. They are currently on leave and heading to us right now. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who suffered any loss.
