To all the newbys that their child is in bc or going soon. it is a long 8 weeks but the graduation is worth every day. my son was sick in bc so his graduation got delayed 2 weeks. he is now in A school and is adjusting just fine as far as i can tell based on his experience of never being away from home this long. we are very proud of him and miss him daily but know this is what he wants to do. anyone have any questions i will be glad to help anyway i can. hang in there.

Barbara,
Thanks for the encouragement. It helps to have support from this group and those who have already been through this. I'll be leaning on everyone over the next few months.

Do any of you NC moms volunteer @ the USO at the Charlotte airport? I have been considering it, but wanted to know a bit more.

Hi smcdaniels,

Crunch time is hard, and it seems like the longer the time, the harder it is. Kudos for being a great mom and allowing Zach to call the shots. It's always hard, to let them do so, especially when they are so young. My son was 17 when he went to Annapolis. He turned 18 during plebe year, and wanted NO cards or recognition... nothing to stand out. He has faced his share of challenges with a maturity, courage and bravery that I did not know he had. If he needs ME, he does call. I will admit, it is not often.

Whenever we get to see Scott, we try and enjoy and cherish all our moments, and keep our goodbyes short. There is so much they need to process to prepare for the next steps of their journey.

As the days neared for Scott's induction, he was like a deer in the headlights. Fortunately, I had a lot of support from N4M so that I was prepared enough to give him the space he needed. I did remind him that I was there if he needed me, but it would be his call.

We will be there for you as well. My heart aches every time another mom has to say goodbye for the 1st time. I know how it feels. I allowed myself to be sad and grieve another "bird" leaving the nest, but I reminded myself that Scott needed to know that I was OK. I put one foot in front of the other taking the body until the mind could follow. It was later I found out that he was grateful that I had done that, so things would be "normal" when he came home. We will be thinking of you and Zach on Monday the 8th & Tuesday the 9th.

Hey guys!
It's crunch time now. My son leaves in two weeks. His recruiter will be taking him to a hotel in Charlotte on Monday, November 8th and he will be flying out Tuesday, November 9th. My first instinct was to tell the recruiter that I wanted to take him to Charlotte, but Zach feels it will be better to drop him at the recruiter's office on Monday and say our goodbyes there. He said it would be easier for all of us. It's time to let go and let him do for himself. I am both proud of the maturity he is showing and sad that it's time to let him go. He is only 18 and it's scary, but he has to do this on his own terms. We are having a surprise going away party for him the weekend before he leaves, and this weekend we are spending time together as a family since he will be gone through Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess I'm just in need of a little support right now. The reality of everything is really starting to hit.

My son is PIR on 11/12/10. If any of you can't make it to PIR and would like some one from our group to act as a "replacement" family member please make me a friend. We are lucky to be able to travel and understand that even a surrogate is better than having no one there. We could take your SR to dinner, cheer loudly when their DIV passes, and give him/her hugs, etc. afterwards.

Hi, looking for bootcamp grads on 10/15/10 from NC. My son is Ship 12 Div 347. We're from Hamlet, NC, flying to IL on Thursday. Would love to meet and get to know some of the families of men and women graduating with Div 347 from NC.
