Hi Paula, Welcome! I live in Dixon, work in Rocklin. My son is on his first deployment aboard the USS Stennis. He's been in the Navy for 7 months. He's an ABH on the hangar bay.

Millie.....Welcome to the group. I am a neighbor I live in Fair Oaks.

Its tuff having your love one gone. My Daughter In-Law is going through what you are, but just in Virginia.
This is my son's third deployment.

I admire her. She doesn't let his deployments get her down. She is a stay at home mom of two little girls. When the girls don't have pre-school or lessons, she takes them to one of several play areas, museums and other activities. She never lets a day go by that they do get up, get dressed and leave the house.

One thing my son does before he leaves for his deployments is he has a vidoe camera and he tapes himself reading the girls favorite books. He holds the book and reads to the girls like they where sitting together. When the girls are needing some quite time my daughter in-law gets the books and tape out and they girls have reading time with dad. Some days she says that is the only peace she get during the day. The girls love reading along with dad and never get tired of the video.

Let me know if you need to talk, I am just around the corner.

Hi, Stephanie! Left a message on your personal page. We're in Livermore. Haven't heard of any micro-groups on our area. Our Juston graduated December 5. It's all been new for us, too. Drop me a line sometime. Elaine

Hi Everybody: I'm new - while my son has been in the Navy for six years this site is new to me. We live in Nevada City. I'll get back later - have to get to work. Happy and Safe New Year.

Has anyone had a son or daughter out on an Independent Assignment to Afghanistan?
Comment by LaVonda on November 20, 2008 at 8:10pm
Thank you. I'm assuming that she will get that book after tomorrow. Her recruiter said he will be working with her and other recruits between now and bootcamp. She is in great shape and works out now so the physical part shouldn't be too bad for her.
Now for a possible silly question, how can I learn what all of the acronyms stand for? BC (boot camp, got that one!) but DEP, PIR and some of the others have me stumped!

My daughter is going down today to MEPS. She was told she will be in delayed entry till July or August. My husband was a Marine "back in the day". However this is new to me! Any suggestins for encouraging her and getting her ready for bootcamp?

Hi Carli,
Welcome to our Navy family!! That is very normal, when my daughter left for BC I caught my husband opening her bedroom door he was just standing there looking in, I said it's OK to say you miss her he was like I was just checking to see if she forgot anything. I laughed and said yeah right. It is very hard but as days go by it gets easier, once you get that first real phone call and real letter which is usually about 2 1/2 - 3 weeks in you feel better just hearing there voice and knowing they are OK. Those letters are the best I miss them LOL. Lean on us all whenever you need!! These boards are what got me through BC and kept me sane!! Take Care Kathy

Brenda....Thanks for the welcome. Yes, it would be nice to have a social gathering for the moms in this area, esp for those spending their first holiday season without their child. Jody
