Welcome Darlene & Proud Navy Wife! My son's been in Mayport since mid July (not long). If you're looking for information, I recommend checking the base paper that you should be able to find online. It's called the Mayport Mirror and has lots of information about things to do, lots of ads, and may help you gather information about the area. For me, I'm looking forward to a visit to Mayport -- sometime during winter when the rest of the country is cold and dreary!

Hello everyone, I joined a few weeks ago and my son just arrived in Mayport tonight after 10 days of leave at home. He's assigned to the USS Philippine Sea. Any info or insights are welcome. I sure hope we get a chance to visit him in Mayport sometime in the future, it sounds awesome to me!

Robin, sounds like a plan. Might even be a little warmer!
We had to feed so many last year, we didn't have one piece of turkey left!

Robin, you should find a hotel with a little kitchen and cook Ali's Thanksgiving meal ;-)

Alyse, thanks. He finally got word from someone. It took nearly 18hrs to hear something. A doc I work with got a call saying his son had been injured and was going to the hospital. They didn't tell him what hospital, where, or what kind of injury except he was told he was "knocked out" for a few minutes while training with the Navy. They told him he would be hearing something again soon. We got another call the next day while at work, giving the rest of his info. His son (the Marine) spent two days in the hospital and will be on work restriction for two weeks. Being a doctor he wanted to have some sort of say regarding his treatment and having so little information really upset him (and it would have me too). He now knows how to contact appropriate personnel. He should have known that info from the begining, and I had no clue. He was ready to hop a plane to San Diego and leave his patients sitting here. He did tell me he was very satisfied with his treatment and the work up he was given at the hospital there.
