Our sailor seems to understand he will have off from either Dec. 15th or Dec. 22 until Jan. 2nd. Does anyone know if the airforce base close to there has transportation to our local airforce base?
Also, how long do they need to have been in A school before they can volunteer in their recruiting office to save some of their holiday? I would hate to seem him lose so much vacation time this early in his schooling. He has only had one week of A school.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
BTW--he wants to buy a car now. What experiences have any of you had (personally, in discouraging it.)

I would like to know this too. My son will be swearing in on 9/9 so he will not be in very long before the holidays.
I also would like to know about Christmas. Scott has heard a couple of different dates, but you need to know beforehand to make travel plans. Does the whole base close down? Also, I don't know all the lingo - what is A school, ET? What is this about volunteering in the recruiting office to save some of the holiday? He said they get 4 days off at Thanksgiving, but isn't going to head home for that. I don't have experience with car buying. Our son was very glad to sell his car and doesn't want to buy another unless he has to. Good luck with the car buying!
Hi everyone, Jeff is home this weekend from Goose Creek. There will definitely be a stand down over the holidays but no official date set yet. I know this doesn't help in airline arrangements but what can you do?? haha
Hi Moms, Fr. John here, I'm not sure what the dates for the holiday stand down are yet, but if you'd like I can always find out and let you know the exact dates. As far as the whole base shutting down, we do go on holiday stand down, but that doesn't mean the base or it's facilities, such as the galley or stores, shuts down. They remain fully active during this period. Infact, if your Sailors know of any Sailors who won't be going home for Christmas let me know because there are plenty of families at the Chapel who are happy to open their homes and families to them during this time. Also, if your Sailor is not going home for Thanksgiving we usually have our Thanksgiving Dinner the Sunday before Thanksgiving and it's great, all homemade, except for the Turkey...store bought, but home cooked by one of our retired Master Chiefs.
As for buying a car, tell them get an appointment with the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society here on base and get some good advise. If they insist on buying a car, tell them to go directly to reputable Car Dealership, ie Nissan, Toyota, Chevy, not to one of these corner dealerships. It may be a little more expensive, but in the long run they'll be better off. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Fr. John
We are concerned about the car deal--wonder if he should purchase or borrow hubby's car instead and keep it licensed in home state. Anyone have any more info?
And thanks for the Thanksgiving Day info!
My son will be home on leave in a few weeks from Goose Creek and will be driving his car back. He is keeping it registered in his home state for now. The problem with driving back is that it cuts into his leave but he really feels he needs the car there.
How long a drive? We're 12 hours with experience--my son has never driven more than 5 hours. Still think we are going to push a NO on this purchase. Would prefer to loan him our car, and then hubby & I figure how to share a ride to two different schools.
Let's keep our "trip ticks" together if we need to share a ride anytime. Have you ever been to Charleston in the spring time? It is unbelievable! My brother and his family lived there for about 5 years.
For insurance purposes, and I can't remember all three, my two sailors had to keep 2 of 3 things registered in Minnesota. So they have home state driver's licenses, home state plates and there is one other thing - your sailor can find out. Not a lot of help - but some information for you. Have a great day -
Kathy
For cars, you will need to check the rules for SC. Every state is different, and it involves where the driver's license was issued, where the car is registered and where it is insured from. Some states only allow the out of state registration for six months before you must switch over to the new state; I know this applies in Utah even if you're borrowing a car from a relative. This varies for the military from state to state. Contact SC DMV or look up their website.

As an ex-sailor myself, I know holidays on base can be lonely, but I strongly discourage borrowing unearned leave and going into the hole. I've had some wonderful times with my temporary Navy family when I couldn't go home, save those precious leave days for longer stretches when your sailor can spend more time with you. Heck, I spent Thanksgiving, Christmas AND New Years in bootcamp! As for the base stand down, the sailors only need to take leave if they are traveling out of the area. Go visit them perhaps? After years and years, decades even, my holidays are when I'm with the folks I love, not dates on a calendar.
I agree holidays are when you are with the one you love not the date on the calendar
I have spent many a holiday away from my sailors and know that there will be many more to come, If we can have any time together we call that christmas or thanksgiving birthday etc
Greetings...Do our sailors have to meet a certain level before they would be allowed leave for Thanksgiving? My son started his training the first part of Sept. and said that he doesn't know if he'll get leave to come home for TG or not. If he definitely won't, I'd like to get a trip scheduled to go to GC for that time, but it would be a whole lot cheaper for us if we could just put him on a plane to come here instead. Anyone's informed input on this would be greatly appreciated:-)
