My son made it home this morning at 6:30. He left GC at 3:30 Friday and was stuck in WV for much of the time. But so glad to have him here! Hope everyone else's sailors are making it home without too much delay!

Thanks for the update on Beckley. Glad the snow has stopped. Haven't heard from them for a few hours, they got off I-77 and were looking for somewhere to stay. Hoping they found that. How much snow is in Pittsburgh?

My son is stuck in WV - around Beckley - anyone know anything about the weather or road conditions. I guess 77 N is closed. He left GC yesterday afternoon, left Mt. Airy, NC today around 9:30 AM this morning and has been stuck for 3 hours in the sam…

Does anyone know if they let the sailors out a little early today? My son and his wife are driving to Columbus, Ohio and it looks like rain, snow, sleet the whole way. Hope it won't be as bad as they are calling for and everyone gets to their destin…

About me:
I am a mom of two. Our son headed to Great Lakes before Thanksgiving 2007 and is now in nuclear school in Charleston South Carolina. We have a daughter who is a senior at OSU, not thinking about the service. I work part time as a tutor in the Columbus Schools.

When I heard “Navy,” I:
Needed to learn more about it
From my experience with the Navy, the most important thing I learned was:
Everything is out of my control! I can no longer make sure everything is okay, but I can only be there if he wants to talk, send care packages and let him know we love him and are proud of him.
Through this Navy experience, I now believe:
It was positive and maturing. Our relationship has grown stronger.

Debbie, I would love to get together this weekend. I have been talking to another mom (Cynthia), she is available on Saturday after 4p.m. Is that too late for you? Let me know...I would love to meet you both.

Debbie, Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I have been traveling for the past week and I have so much going on at work. I sometimes don't know which way is up. My son is at Great Lakes as we speak but I do not know at this time what his reassignment is or what he will be doing. He actually scored one point lower than is allowable for a passing score for A school and went up for review in front of a panel. After the review they did pass him but was told that he should reconsider continuing on. He was hanging in by the skin of his teeth and was spending the maximum time in study hall. I believe he did have a choice in what his next path will be but I have not been completely clued in on all of that. I can't believe that he was just here and we never even brought that up. I was so in the moment and had to share his attention with his new wife that I just didn't have the oppurtunity to sit and ask him too many questions. I would love to meet all of my new Columbus Navy Moms for coffee, so no worries about "inviting yourself". It just quite honestly never came to pass because I had a work emergency. I am so sorry our plans for coffee did not come together. I spent the entire weekend working. Then I was off to Dallas, TX to work the rest of the week. It is Thursday and I am finally getting caught up with all of my emails that I missed out on while I was away. I would still love to meet someday real soon for coffee. I know the holidays are coming so lets try to do it soon. I am not sure what your weekends look like but mine are hit and miss. My daughter is applying to local colleges and I think this weekend Saturday I am taking her for a tour at OSU. Possibly next weekend? Let me know?

Debbie, My son has been station in Goose Creek for about 10 months. He compeleted his A school but has now been reassigned. He will not be completing Nuke School. He really struggled. I guess it just didn't click for him. He was spending hours and hours studying. He was so worried that his dad and I were going to be dissapointed in him. I was dissapointed only in the fact that I know how much he wanted this not that he wasn't able to accomplish it. So...a new chapter in Navy life has started for him. He is going back to Great Lakes for some new training for his new assignment then down to Florida where he will await his first deployment. Rumor is that it will be a 9 month deploy. His dad and I are anxiously awaiting the details.
It has been a huge adjustment from California to here and the wheather has to be one of the biggest. I am freezing all the time. Bundled in my blanket right now as I am on the computer. I do love the fall colors. My husband and I love living here though. We traded in our city life in Los Angeles and bought a small piece of property with 2.5 acres of land and now on the weekends I tend to my flowers and he mows the grass and takes care of all the fruit trees and grapes that we have. It is a huge change but a good one. I would love to know if the Columbus mom's ever get together again. Do I look for it to post on the Ohio Navy Moms page?

Hi Debbie - I will feel better when I hear from her that she is doing okay. Melissa plans to go to A school for AECF - advanced electronic computer field. Her A school is right there in Great Lakes. She will graduate BC on Oct 2 and then A school will last 6 months. We plan to go for graduation.
You said that there is a place on here that talks about what they do each week - I am going to look for it - do you know which section it is under? This website is really helping me cope - it is tough - I am used to being able to talk to her anytime I want. But this is good for both of us.
talk to you soon

You're welcome, Debbie - by the way another factor regarding graduation is the fact that the students are on four different crews, with one crew off and the other three on three different shifts. They stay on those shifts until the end, complicating getting all the students together for a ceremony.
So - you were in Arco? That is indeed the nearest town to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory, which has a number of sites scattered around it, with a number of research reactors, and the old Navy prototype site, where there are three decommissioned plants (not sure what remains of them). There is still a facility at that site that processes the fuel assemblies from expended reactor cores. Here's a link that includes the public knowledge of the site. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Reactors_Facility
This facility is a bit off of the main drag though, and is probably not the one you saw. You probably saw the old SL-1 site, which is a pretty fascinating story - I've attached the wiki link to that, also... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SL-1
By the way, you no doubt remember how remote the site is - we all lived in either Idaho Falls or Pocatello, and rode contracted Greyhound type buses that made the round trip several times a day, and picked sailors and civilian workers up all around both towns. It was an hour each way, but wasn't as bad as it sounds, because the buses were comfortable enough for us to nap an hour each direction - something we were grateful to be able to do. We had a good time there in the area, being so close to places like the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Hi Debbie,
Not new to Columbus, just to the Navy and this site. You're not far from me at all-I live close to Bethel and Sawmill. I'm not sure exactly when Chet graduates from Basic- he said 8 or 9 weeks so I guess that will be in April sometime, then hopefully he's off to the DLI in CA. I guess I'm going to have to get up to speed on all these abbreviations, acronyms and initials so I can understand what everyone is talking about in their comments! I'll start writing some notes now, so I have something to send when I get the address- thanks for the heads up!
